My mom and I made caramel apples last night, I started to eat mine today, but it was rock solid!!

Is there an ingredient I can put into it to make it not get hard?

I didnt make homemade caramel, I got caramels from the store, and melted them--if that helps.

You should add milk or cream to the caramels from the store, as they get incredibly hard when you melt them and then let them reharden.

At this point, there's not much you can do except maybe microwave the caramel apple very briefly and eat it. I don't think it will stay melted for long though.

Just like making homemade candy, the hardness depends on the heat. Buy a candy thermometer and use the scale imprinted on the side. The hotter the caramel, the harder it will be when it cools. BTW, stick the hard caramel apples in a large container with a couple slices of white bread. The moisture from the bread should soften up the caramel in a day or so. This trick works on hard cookies as well.

You probably got it too hot or over cooked it. The sugar is whats causing the hardening affect. you'll have to start over. Try adding a little condensed sweetened milk when warming it up next time.
It will thin it out with taking away flavor.
