pleading guilty before the court. The judge assigns him a young defense lawyer and it's his first case. The lawyer consults the man and realizes that he is truly sorry for what he did and argues well in court but the man is proven guilty and without exception is sentanced to death. The young lawyer steps up to the judge and says that as long as the punishment is executed for the crime, justice is served. It does not stipulate that the guilty person himself must serve the punishment only that the debt to society is paid. The judge agrees, saying yes but who would do such a thing? "I will." says the lawyer. Tears flow from the judge's eyes as he says " what is written is written, according to the law." So the lawyer takes the place of the man and the man is set free. He asks someone" why did the judge cry?" the answer- The lawyer was his only son, and he had taught his son to love unconditionally.
Any comments on this analogy or parable?

I don't know if a parable or an analogy could be taken as true.

I think it is horrible executing one innocent person for a guilty one. What kind of legal system would allow such an immoral deed? I say the judge ought to be hung for doing that.

(And yes, I know what your parable is supposed to be about. I have the same opinion about that as well. Why should God sacrifice his son when he could have just forgiven everyone. Is he not powerful enough to do so? Why the need for all the bloodshed?)

I heard it, and it's not true. I wouldn't be surprised that there was a lawyer who would do such a thing, but no judge would allow it, no matter how moved. Even if you did get a judge to agree, the government wouldn't allow it. They'd pat that kid on the head and send him home, then fry the murderer with extreme prejudice.

No, I haven't heard it before. And I'm glad. The lawyer could have helped any number of people. He could have worked to outlaw the death penalty. His martyrdom would serve absolutely nobody but a murderer who, repentant or not, is a *murderer.* We aren't punished for our motives, but for our actions. The lawyer's actions could also be called suicide. What a waste.

ETA - I'm not wholly comfortable with the Jesus comparison. Even if you believe in original sin, it's nothing close to murder, and the huuuge percentage of humanity haven't committed murder. Also, the lawyer dies for one man, not all of humanity. Again I say--waste.

This is incredible, but could be possible in India where persons like King Hariscandra, King Bishi and King Dilip lived and left many such examples of Truth and love for Truth.

the kid was dumb--the judge being his father is a conflict of interests and could have gotten the whole case thrown out of court--the lawyer was literally too stupid to live

is this a chinese folk tale or something, Its full of loop holes, the young lawyer didn't do anything, therefor can't be punished, and they can't trade places, it's illogical, the story is written by some dummie. who can't think right
