Dogs don't sweat and even if they did, they are covered with fur so the fur
would insulate them and keep the heat in. So they pant to get rid of excess
heat from their bodies. The heat turns the water in their mouths into water
vapor. In other words, the heat is used for a different purpose; instead of
heating the dog's body, it is used to evaporate the water from the dog's
mouth.

Well dogs only have do not sweat like you or I. Most of our heat loss is from our heads. We sweat to cool our bodies. Dogs bodies are not the same, most of their heat loss is from their tongue as it is their heat regulator. The tongue hangs out and their breath moves air over it to help them cool off. The tongue often gets larger and more moist. This cools the blood in the tongue and in turn, cools the rest of the blood cooling the dog off. Sometimes dogs will also pant during excitement or fear. If you notice your dog panting, and the dog appear dry, he more than likely is dehydrated. Another test is to grab the skin around the neck and see how fast it retracts. A well hydrated dogs skin should bounce back quickly, while a dehydrated dogs skin will not. Keep you dog hydrated with an available clean supply of water.

Answer Dogs have the ability to sweat, but in places that are a little different from humans. Dogs sweat through their pads and feet. Their skin and armpit areas don't contain sweat glands like ours do. Their main method of ridding themselves from heat, however, is by panting, which is a very different mechanism than what we generally use.

For these reasons, we must take great care to protect our dogs from heat stroke. Dogs with compromised respiration, like bulldogs and pugs, are at a very high risk of easily overheating just because they can't pant very efficiently.

They also have alot of blood vessels in their mouth so they pant to draw in cool over the vessels like a swamp cooler. Hope that helps.

Dogs dont sweat like humans, Sweating is done to rid the body of excess heat. Since dogs dont sweat, they have to pant. The dogs tounge is long and large, FULL of blood vessels, and there is alot of surface area. So when the pant, they pull massive amounts of air over the moist, wet tounge, cooling the hot blood in it, and the cooled blood runs to the organs in the body, cooling the body temperature down.

Dogs, unlike humans, do not have sweat glands. They pant in order to reduce their body temperature. If your dog is panting heavily then make sure it has access to plenty fresh water which will also help to keep it cool. It is also better, but not always possible, to avoid letting your dog get too warm. Make sure if it is lying outside that it has somewhere shady out of direct sunlight.

It is the way by which the body temperature is regulated. All warm blooded animals have a constant body temperature and when the surrounding temperature increases, the have to cool off their body. We humans do it by sweating. But in case of most of the animals, because of their thick body coat, sweating is less possible. So the only way to let the heat off is through the evaporation of moisture from tongue. That's why they pant.

Dogs pant to get rid of toxic wastes which is similar to our sweating, as dogs have no sweat glands. You will find a dog panting more in the warmer climates than when it is cooler.
