She has had her first seaon and it's almost time to take her to the vets to be spayed. She's a lovely dog, very biddable and easy to train. Occasionally, when she's playing with my German Shepherd, she goes potty and zooms around the house or garden like a maniac. Sometimes I'm afraid she will hit something and do herself some damage. Will she calm down after spaying?

To all Americans who answer my question. When I say she goes potty I do not mean she wees herself. I mean she goes mad, belting around everywhere.

Spaying won't change anything about her personality..it is what it is...what she's born with. She will act like a puppy while she's a puppy spayed or not...she will mature as she gets older. Spaying will take away hormone driven behaviors and she'll be much happier and healthier.
Also spaying doesn't make a dog snappy, cause aggression or any other such nonsense. If a dog is prone to be that way it will be that way spayed or not.

Hiya Well my old staffie was spayed at around the age yours is now, and I now have a 2 year old staffie, sky, who hasnt been spayed and all i can say is i havent noticed any difference in thier behaviour, my old dog Mishka was going potty like this right up until a few weeks before she died and Sky does this too, my friend has a male staffie who is 3 and he does it too so when they are together (hilarious to watch) the knocks and bumps sound so painful but they are toughies and dont seem to notice. Good luck
note to slick...if your comment was made from the experience of a "bad staffie" then there was an irresponsible owner somewhere who is to blame, you on the otherhand have nobody to blame but yourself for your ignorant, childish answer.

She will maybe to some very small degree. Spaying her will bring her metabolism down slightly, but not her energy level till she is around 2 years old. She will keep that behavior most likely after the surgery. If she is that active, Increase walks, and get her into a training program now. So when she takes off and zooms around you can correct her and give her mind some positive things to think about. The peeing is maybe cause she is in heat or she is showing submissivness to the Shepherd. Depends on what happens after you get her home, as to how to go about figuring out the reasons of her peeing and zooming!

I was worried about the same thing before i got my little doggy spayed, because she was so excited and crazy, and i didn't really want that to change, well, it's been a little over a week since the procedure, and after the anestesia wore off, she was back to her crazy self(mainly), the only real difference that i noticed-which is slowly changing now-is that she is much more protective of her belly (where her stitches are). Don't worry, you'll, more than likely, still have the same pooch after she comes out from the knife.

Your dog sounds like a typical young animal. She obviously has a lot of energy and is playful and boisterous.
Having her spayed will not reduce her energy level. Once she has recovered from the surgery she will be back to normal.
Age and maturity will make a difference.
It makes me sad that people want their dogs to act like adults when they are still young. It is similar to the intolerance shown to young people who are always being told to act their age and grow up. They all do eventually.
Dog's lives are very short and before you know it you will have a old dog shuffling along on the end of the lead.
Enjoy your dog while she is still full of life and energy.

No but she might with age. A lot of dogs don't fully mature until they are 2, and the high-energy ones might never slow down. The notion that spaying/neutering an animal changes its personality is a myth. All it does is prevent sexual behavior from developing in the future-it does not alter the dog or cat's current personality.

Spaying doesnt always work in calming a dog down. She will most likely just grow out of it with age.

Spaying will more than likely not work, it has work for some, but not in general.
On the bright side they are robust dogs, hardly get hurt.
My family has been breeding and showing staffy's for 20yrs, n i hate when people like slick say untruths, staffy's are the most lovable dogs

having your dog fix is not going to affect her ways in one bit. the only thing it will do is, make it so she does not have pups. the way your dog is now is the way she will be after the spaying. and age will calm her down, she will not hurt her self running and it is natural for dogs to do this. don't be so much a worry wart, l know how you feel. just let her have her run and she will not run into anything.

Most likely. Although I've had my ACD spayed and she still zooms around like a maniac xD That's most certainly in her breeding though.
