Just cuz I'm a stickler for things like this, bats aren't birds, they're mammals.
The only thing I can think of is to call animal control or whatever it's called in your area, but then again, since bats are "known" for carrying rabies, they'll probably all be put down, which is a shame. They are free, organic pest control. They're also fun to mess with. Take some small pebbles out into the yard right at dark, and when you see the bats flying around, throw a pebble up into the air and watch them swoop for it. My brothers and I used to do this all the time. (Don't blame us, we're simple-minded folk.) ;) Or, you can just trade roofs with me........ I'll take them.....

First of all, make no attempt to kill the bats.
There is no such thing as an effective bat repellant or device that will make them go away.
There is no way to "relocate" bats. It doesn't work that way. Once they find a place to live, they'll stay there forever - each new generation will live there. You can't get them "back to where they came from" - most were probably born in your attic - your attic is where they came from.
Contrary to other posts here, the installation of a bat house will NOT make them leave. If they like your house and attic, they'll stay.
The only way to get rid of them is to exclude them from the structure and seal up all the entry points AFTER they are out. You must seal gaps as small as a half inch.
Please don't try to seal the openings at night, after they've left. At any given time, part of the colony is still inside the house/attic.
Please don't harm the bats. They're valuable animals, and they live a long time. It's often best to call a professional with experience to remove them. If you kill a colony of bats, you're breaking the law in almost any state in the US.

Bats are actually very beneficial to have around, they eat thousands of harmful insects such as mosquitoes that can carry west nile virus, encephalitis, malaria, etc. Also, bats are no way related to birds...they are actually most closely related to primates. DO NOT kill them, bats are protected as they are declining worldwide. You say you want them relocated to where they came from....they probably come right from your own back yard...they are a part of nature, you cannot expect all of nature to leave or die just because people live there. Obviously you have NO understanding whatsoever of what an ecosystem or even what nature means with a comment like that. If you want to get rid of them...you need to do it HUMANELY. Call animal control or US fish and wildlife service to help you get the bats SAFELY out of there. You will then need to "bat proof" your house afterwards or more bats will find their way in again. Here are some tips on how to do that:

Why would you want to get rid of the bats?
1) They eat bugs!!!
2) Bat guano is AWESOME plant fertilizer!
If you want to get them out of your house, buy some bat-houses and put them up in your back yard. It may take a few weeks but the colony should migrate to the houses.
Do what you you can to keep the colony in your neighborhood! Bats are a million times better bug-killers than any bug-spray that the city might use. And that bug spray can cause nerve damage -- bats don't!!
They don't bite people, they eat bugs, they make great fertilizer!! Why get rid of them!? Just let them move into "new" houses outside. :-D

Don't kill them; they are beneficial to the neighborhood.
Find out where they are getting in. Cover the entrances with bird netting that will let them out but they can't get back in. Once they are out, cover the entrances permanently.
Or, go up at night when they've left, scare out any remaining bats, and block the entrances after they've left.
If any bats could be hibernating, wait till spring to do this, or they will be trapped inside.
If it is summer and they could have young, wait until autumn.

You have to be carefull, some bats are protected and you are not allowed to disturb them. If you get in contact with the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (U.S) or D.E.F.R.A (U.K) They will be able to give you advice and someone may be able to come out and see what species of bat they are and how to move them on if possible. But i have known of a woman in england who has to live with the bats in her attic because it is a criminal offence to disturb or destroy them.
