Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in a person's mood, energy, and ability to function. Different from the normal ups and downs that everyone goes through, the symptoms of bipolar disorder are severe. They can result in damaged relationships, poor job or school performance, and even suicide. But there is good news: bipolar disorder can be treated, and people with this illness can lead full and productive lives.
About 5.7 million American adults or about 2.6 percent of the population age 18 and older in any given year,1 have bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder typically develops in late adolescence or early adulthood. However, some people have their first symptoms during childhood, and some develop them late in life. It is often not recognized as an illness, and people may suffer for years before it is properly diagnosed and treated. Like diabetes or heart disease, bipolar disorder is a long-term illness that must be carefully managed throughout a person's life.
"Manic-depression distorts moods and thoughts, incites dreadful behaviors, destroys the basis of rational thought, and too often erodes the desire and will to live. It is an illness that is biological in its origins, yet one that feels psychological in the experience of it; an illness that is unique in conferring advantage and pleasure, yet one that brings in its wake almost unendurable suffering and, not infrequently, suicide."
"I am fortunate that I have not died from my illness, fortunate in having received the best medical care available, and fortunate in having the friends, colleagues, and family that I do."
Kay Redfield Jamison, Ph.D., An Unquiet Mind, 1995, p. 6.

Bipolar disorder is Manic-Depression. This means he goes from high to low. Another wards, one minute he can be very anger and out of control. Then within minutes be down and very depressed. He can live a normal life with this illness as long as he has someone there to ALWAYS support/be there for him. I have Bipolar I was diagnosed with it 10 yrs. ago. The only support I had was my therapist until I finally realized If the ones who were supose to love wouldn't help me the only person who could would be me. I started going to anger management groups. Others in the groups would not even talk at first, but I finally told my story and said "what are we doing here if we can't all talk to each other. Isn't that what the group is for?" The reason for this group was I had no one else there for me. Be there for your Husband and if you can't at least get him into a group like this that there are people who will be there.

"SomebodyW" explained it really well. I have bi-polar too. There's a great book from a professor in psychiatry who has bi polar herself that will make you understand very well what it is all about. "Unquiet mind" from Kay Redfield Jamison. I've never read a book that was so recognizable. My parents also read the book so they could understand me better and what I have been going through. I've been on melds for many years now and I'm doing rally well. I went back to college to finish law-school. A normal life is possible.
