Adding fat will show immediately at your waist line. Muscle will not.
I've worked with dozens of people who lost girth, but gained weight. Muscle is compact - fat is not.
My 'star' client gained 2 lbs in weight and lost 8-1/2 inches round her hips.
The only way to effectively trim fat weight is to increase your cardio-pulmonary efficiency, or fitness - your heart, lungs and circulation. You can double your 24/7 calory consumption in this way.
You are dealing with a natural life process. Respect it, follow it, and it will reward you.

Eat nourishing food with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables being part of it. Chew each morsel at least 32 times. This will activate signal to the brain as soon as u have had enough. Besides this change in eating style, take regular light exercises and brisk walks every day. U will be able to gain/shed all extra weight gracefully and in a reasonable time span. No food or drink in between the food and not more than three meals a day, unless u r diabetic.

If the measurements of the body increase in general, it is fat and not muscle.

You will need a skin caliper. You can get these at all fitness stores. It will take measurements of different areas of the body (arms, legs, stomach, shoulder, etc.). With this, you can find your pounds in muscle and your pounds in fat; it will have directions on how to do these calculations. These skin calipers range from as low as $20 but I suggest getting one around $40-$50. Hope this helps!

buy some cheap hand calipers online. you can take a 3 point skin fold test to measure fat loss when dieting down. there is a 5 and 7-point skin fold test but you need the assistance of another person and they have to know the proper locations in order for those test to be extremely accurate.

monitoring fat loss is essential to dialing down the diet.

the link below has the basics on skin fold testng:
