Is is just these two programs that you don't have sound? Can't help you if it is, but make sure the mute button isn't clicked on media player.
Of course check your volume. Double click your volume icon from your taskbar and using the advanced option, make sure each "slide" control is all the way up and nothing is muted.
Check speaker connections.
You may have to reinstall your sound driver if all else fails.

Do you have sound on anything? If not, you may need to reinstall your sound drivers. You can do so by right clicking on "My Computer" (the icon not the shortcut) and clicking properties. Go the the Hardware tab and click "Device Manager". Look under the Sound, Video, and Video Game Controllers section and uninstall your sound drivers. Then, right click on the main category and click "Scan for Hardware Changes". The computer will detect your sound drivers and reinstall them. That should clear up your problem.

If it is not your volume or speakers, you may need to reinstall your sound card driver. You can find the name of it by looking in the device manager, and you'll probably be able to find a replacement online. It happened to me a few times.
