Do you know anyone that knew him or where he lived at the time of his death? If so start there. Even if you do not know exactly where he lived at the time, you can contact the public libraries and have them check out the old obituaries; they have them on file. As far as finding out how he died...that is usually confidential. You would need to find someone that knew him. you can also contact the state office and they will refer you to the correct department. Also, have you tried looking up his name on the internet? Sometimes if they were ever in the paper, had a court case, or anything that was published about him could be a clue. It might not tell you much about him but you could probably at least figure out what state or town he lived in. Good luck.

If he's your half brother can't you inquire with a relative or close family friends that might know something? Call social security office in your area and explain to them whats going on and if that's all you need to know they may be able to help you. Try the red cross also. You have his ss# so it's not like you are trying to hurt or intrude on anyone. Good luck with this and I'm sorry for your loss.

It would be very difficult for you to do it yourself as his private information (address, tel #, etc) is exactly that, private.
My suggestion would be to hire a Private Investigator. They have access to information and people that would take you a long time to access or you may never be able to access. Once you know where he lived, you can talk to friends/neighbors and get more details from there.
