First, that depends on what you consider all the evils to be exactly.
Religion has caused many wars, many deaths, many conflicts period. (Which is strange considering most religions consider those things to be bad.) Religion has brought fear, doubt, dismay, disbeleif, dishonesty, and even pain to some. I consider all of those things negative in nature.
But, flip side, religion has brought many people peace of mind, hope, thankfulness, and a sense of feeling closer to their God/s of choice. It has also given people a sense of choice, responsability, and identity. Those I consider good things.
Keep in mind that even though (this goes for anyone reading this) your religion may not have neccassarily done every single one of the things I listed as good or bad, someone else's religion may cover what yours has not. I'm talking about religion in general, as a whole...not each religion individually.
I guess it has a way of balancing out...well, at least has good and bad aspects.

No, it obviously isn't.
First, define what you mean by religion.
Second, explain what you mean by evils.
Bill Maher said that words have meaning or they don't.
The term 'religion' just by its spelling, and normal use, has
to mean 'rules,' and 'law.'
Suppose that the bible is a book of rules. That book of rules
talks about how Jesus cured sick people.
Is it evil to cure sick people? Is it evil to say that a Jewish man
named Jesus healed sick people?
If religion is the root of all evils, then it must be evil to say
that Jesus healed people.
If religion is the root of all evils, then religion must be evil.
Is a buddhist evil, too? Buddhism is a philsophy, not religion.
If religion is evil, is a priest that visited a sick widow and prayed
for her an evil person?
If a little old lady goes to church, prays, then goes home and
bakes her muffins, is that evil too?
Did Mother Theresa have a suicide bomb strapped to her chest?
Is the word republican mentioned in the new testament?
I know it's not.
There are "protestants" who wish to divorce the term religion
from the bible. That's really their problem, not mine.
They're never going to rid the word 'religion' out of the bible.
They want the word 'charity' out too. Tell you a story?
Guess why: The love of money is the root of all evil. new testament, 1 Timothy.

It may not be the root, but it is a great vehicle. A Trojan horse. Think of it; if you were Satan what better revenge than to turn all your enemies followers against Him by making them think they are still following Him. A bloodless takeover. Do not religious ppl account for most of the world's large scale attrocities (evil)? How many wars are fought in the name of Satan? Is it not Catholic vs Protestent in Ireland. Did not the Christians give you the crusades, witch hunts, the Nazi's, Isreal's problems, the war in the middle east? Even the "cold war" was against "Godless communist".
In comparrison old Satan is not even in the same league for chaos and destruction. Unless what we know as judeo christinity is just his thinly disguised covert op against God. Even the symbols--christians use the cross Jesus was killed on; Muslims the moon, a sign diriving the term "lunacy" (insanity); and the Jews the star of David, when Lucifer is known as the "morning star". Then in the end the joke's on us! Just food for thought...

No, selfishness is the muse of all evil. Many evils were commited with none non secular involvement. Politics, land possession, racial prejudice and different situations are frequently used as excuses for violence or different kinds of evil. even as faith or the different idea is used to make human beings have self assurance they are extra useful than some different person, it truly is going to become an excuse for evil. If a prepared crime gang kills contributors of alternative gangs who're competing for his or her drug commerce, what does that ought to do with faith?

I'd say a large majority of it. But. The more seemingly hateful religions are based on something much more dangerous. Traditions. Traditions do no allow advancement of human perceptions and understanding to affect it. This leads to mass ignorance, genocide, and corruption.

No. Religion is words on a page. People can interpret them for good or for evil.
Essentially, it always comes down to what people do with a thing, not the thing itself. (You know...religion doesn't kill people, people kill people. Like that.)
