I'm playing a big trip from Phoenix to Toronto to Cairo then back to Phoenix. I want to go to Toronto early May, stay there for about a month, go to Cairo early in June, stay there for about a month, then go back to Phoenix early July. I'm not sure when to get my plane tickets. Some tell me that it would be too expensive now and they will go down in a couple of months, others tell me the earlier I buy the cheaper. Any ideas? Thanks.

The people who say prices will go down in a couple months are reasonably close to correct. Airline prices are based on a number of factors, but the most critical is "unsold inventory."

Your itinerary does have a problem. You plan to travel in the best months for international travel. The hottest months are June, July and September. However, let's answer your question.

Wait. It's too early to be looking for the best deal. Right now the airlines haven't got a clue how summer bookings are looking. In general, they get serious about discount pricing 60 days before it's time to head out to the runway. So, start looking closely in early March when seats go on sale. Also, watch the news headlines. If one airline offers a sale, others will follow.

Lastly, travel into and out of Canada is rather expensive. Why? There's no competition to air travel in Canada today. I'm not sure you will find any good deals because of your Toronto stopover. I don't have an answer to this, but look into Phoenix, Chicago, Cairo, and return to Phoenix. With a stopover in Chicago, you would then plan Chicago-Toronto-Chicago travel. That's one idea.

Book as early a possible. Its cheapest. One thing to do could be to book a full fare or a buissnes class ticket that alouds you to change the flight untill departure or even after. But always check what rules apply on your ticket when you get them! Johan

the earliest you buy the cheapest you get. sometimes they will have last minute deals. but you are planning for staying at 3 places. so i dont think its good for you to wait till late and book. there may be risk of not getting tickets at all. so the sooner the better.
