How did it happen? If you were born that way, can't change a thing, I don't suppose.

Well, first of all, it is not a discoloration... It is more like a coloration, isn't it???

Do you have this kinda hyper pigmentation in other places, such as axillae or groin areas???
If that's the case, it may be a disorder called Achantosis Nigricans... Which is not that weird, it is usually associated to Obesity, diabetes, or the use of certain drugs... In case you don't have any of this, I will probably be only an indicative of insulin resistance, which may lead, at the end of the day, to diabetes... It only show that you are genetically predisposed to have it...

I would suggest you to go to the doc, to have your glucose levels checked, to get rid of those extra pounds, to eat healthy and to do exercise...

Good luck!

Unless you were born that way you should see a doctor. Hyperpigmentation is a type of skin darkening that occurs when certain skin cells release more pigment (dark color). Hyperpigmentation can be the symptom of some severe diseases (e.g. Addison's, scleroderma), and any such symptoms require prompt professional medical investigation.
Take care.
