I can't speak for Christians; the only time when Jews are supposed to refrain from sex is during periods of mourning or fasting. Otherwise, for us, sex is considered a "mitzvah" - a commandment, and a good deed.

I am a Christian. There is a passage in the new testament. States that if a husband and wife agree to abstain for prayer and fasting that is is OK. But not to abstain for a long time least one gives into adultery.

I have never heard of such a thing. There was once a religious sect called the Shakers, who supposed that abstaining altogether was a good thing; of course, they are now extinct.

The Bible says to abstain only by mutual consent for the purpose of spiritual pursuits but it never says to set aside certain days for this. It is up to the individual couple.
