DON'T START SCRATCHING

Don't do it it's an insult to the art form.

Oh and they are safe but if you have any respect for them, you won't bother.

Unlike what any of the other people have said, you're not going to die if you use ink from a pen. I have 13 tats 10 of which I did myself using ink from black gel pens. Just make sure you put the ink in a sterile container from the pen, and make sure to sterlize the needle you use.
But I learned from the best in Polk County Jail so if you don't know what your doing it may be best for you to leave it to the pros.
If you're bound and determined to do it then it doesn't matter what anyone tells you, you will do it anyway, but at least know your risks, if you do it wrong, you could end up with a nasty infection, and spending a nice long while in the hospital.
And if you do it right you're going to end up with a nice piece of art that'll look great for years and years.
Now you have the correct information so you decide if you want to take the risk or not.

To the twit that said tattoo inks dont contain metal shut up you dont know what youre talking about, anything you put into the dermis deep enough will stay there, dirt, ash, ink etc. pen ink is fine ON Your skin. But under ??? well thats a different ball game. Consider this, things like ink are usually made in poverty stricken countries like say India. Now just take a look at what they shove in the ganjes river, Dead people they bath in it wash their clothes in it dispose of their sewage in it, ad nauseum. now, where do you think they get their water for industry from ? and thats just the ink you are going to deliberatly MISUSE, how do you plan to sterilise your equipment, skin etc etc???. Yes people get tattoo's in prison using these sorts of things, ive done it seen it etc. BUT THEY ARE IN PRISON and basically dont have a choice what they use if they are going to do it. However I dont think You are in prison. Most homemade tattoo's using poor quality equipment and ink's fade soon after they are done and bits of the lines fall out, due to the fact the depth is uneven. Yeah you might seem cool at school for a while, but that will wear off, unlike the tattoo that someone like me will have to coverup, and if you think that pissy little needle you use at home hurts wait till one of us pro's gets yah and punishes you for taking our art form and bastardising it.

If you really want to do a tattoo with ink then I would tell you to only use india ink. It comes in all colors. The black does fade. It comes out to a blueish.

Tattoo ink is specially manufactured to avoid allergic reactions that can be deadly. Only a fool would attempt to use pen ink. That's what prisoners are forced to do , at their peril, in prison!

none of them are safe because they are not designed to be put into skin. Pen inks contain metals (toxic) among other nasty chemicals. tattoo ink has special surfactants in it to hold the pigment in the dermal layer without being toxic.

Go to a damn professional you cheapskate or you will be paying one later to fix your **** up.

none of them are poisonous, but none of them are sterile. so, if you put it in deep enough to go through all of the layers of the skin then it will enter the blood stream and cause an infection. judging by your question though, poisonous ink is the least of your problems. dirty needles, homemade machine, who knows what else. STOP TATTOOING YOURSELF. IT IS NOT WORTH YOUR LIFE FOR A BAD PIECE OF ART!. LEAVE IT TO THE PROS. that would be me. and unless you live near florida i suggest you go to your local shop and do some art research.
