If the tables aren't too close together you can put the purse behind you in the chair. If they're very close together then put it in your lap, or if you can get away with it, don't bring a purse at all.

In your lap is your best bet depending on how formal the place is. The floor isn't the best place because of germs... then again people will say you should not put in the table for that reason either. If it is a nice little evening bag I may set it on the table depending on how small it is and how fancy the restaurant is.

Hey there... I also have an answer. Mostly, I agree with the other folks who responded, regarding putting the purse in your lap. I would not recommend, however, putting your bag on the table. I believe that is an etiquette violation. Men wouldn't put their wallets there, either, so keep that in mind. I don't know if this is etiquette appropriate or not, but if I am in that situation and I have the room available, I often put it just behind me on the chair. I don't recommend that with open backed chairs, of course, because your purse still ends up on the floor. But avoid the table! Hope that helps!

If it is truly a small evening bag it really needs to go on your lap. Depending on how tight the place settings are at the restaurant the bag may also be place on the table to either side of your silver.

Buy one of those bag hangers which you can hang from the table and has a hook at the end for hanging your small bag. I'm not kidding, it is available in the market.
