Bubbles, why do you assume that they don't want to speak in their language. Get your priorities straight

Yes they can legally. Because their workplace is based on english and if no one else speaks spanish or only a certain group speaks spanish, they can talk about the other works freely without worrying about anyone understanding what their saying. It's not discrimination because the language of the US is english. Now if they said you can't speak english in the workplace, there would be some federal laws violated but as long as the language is not the national language its completely legal.

Maybe she was just mad you didn't speak Spanish. You speak English yet you are 1/2 "native American" French and Irish. She could have been 1/2 "native American" because Mexico is in north America and it is insulting to call a "Mexican" " Spanish" and Mexicans do not want to be confused with Mexican Americans either whom they call "pocho" which is an insult. So maybe she thinks you are a damn Yank instead of a good Canuck. Who knows; but if she was that hot, I'd learn Spanish. I'm assuming that you are in southern US. not Europe.

You're wrong. If you're 1/2 native Canadian Spanish people would assume you're "Maghrebi" i.e. from Morocco, and many Moroccan people speak Spanish. Most people that come to Spain are Germans and French, and in the touristic places, most people learn French because it's easier, and not English because they don't receive too many British tourists.

Where are you? Perhaps there are many Spanish speakers in your current location? So she could have been simply using the most common language of that region?
You also could have been misinterpreting her reaction. Maybe she was frustrated that she couldn't communicate with you, not angry at you.

By the way, the word for "Canadian" in Spanish is "canadiense". So if you're Canadian, you're "canadiense". I hope that helps.

An even better question is "Why is American English not the official language of the United States of America"?

She wasn't Spanish...most likely Mexican, which is a different dialect.

My official stance is 'Hey, retain your native tongue, but learn AE just for the sake of the other 90% of us that you need to interact with'.

I think it was the way you said it to her that made her mad. If you just say no spanish next time that would be better than something long. Where I live a good portion of the hispanics don't speak a word of english and that usually works for me.

It seems to be the same as when American chicks get angry when I don't speak English well.

I don't know how the clever people that have already answered know you were not in Spain at the time - I assumed you were until I read the other answers.

I have noticed that a lot of spanish people think that a Hispanic person who doesn't know their language is a disgrace and has lost their culture. Since they think that you are Hispanic, they think you are a disgrace to your culture.
