I'm assuming by bread knife you mean serrated knife. If thats the case, it depends on the knife, and who its made by. If its a good quality knife bought from a reputable cutlery company, many offer free, or low cost sharpening. Try contacting the manufactuer. If they don't offer this, they may at least give you tips or ideas on how to sharpen it.

You could also try looking for a place locally that offers knife sharpening. Many good kitchen supply stores offer this, even some hardware, and sporting goods stores. Call around.

Certain serrated knives though cannot be sharpened, and if its a cheapie knife, I would just suggest throwing it away, and getting a new one.

If it's a serrated knife (With the little round indentations) then the best bet is to run the FLAT side flat against a sharpening stone, but most of them aren't made for that.
If you mean a regular sharp knife, then lay the stone on a flat surface, holding it carefully by the sides, and run the blade across the top away from you many times. It's as if you can put a coin, like a quarter, under the back edge of the knife, to get the proper angle. You have to do the same thing to the other side, so be careful. Lubrication of the stone is good, water or fine oil will work.
Finally, you can "Strop" the blade, running that edge backwards on some leather straps, or even your blue jeans - If your careful.
To test it, take a piece of paper by the edge, and see if you can cut it finely. If so, you've done right.
If not, use it for throwing practise.

You cut the loaf of bread with a sawing motion, taking care not to rip or flatten the loaf.
