Please help! My cat is acting CRAZY! i think its because of antibiotics she is taking! Ok this is the picture: I got her 3 weeks ago (5 months old?) She was really loveable and sweet and a little playful at times. She had a cold when i got her and I thought she would get over it but she didnt so I got her an antibiotic and the first day she took it she fell asleep all day. The next day, (I have to give it twice a day) she is acting INSANE! Like, WHAT is in that medicine? I cant even pet her without her biting and scratching me to bits. She's not doing it to be mean, just playing, but her scratches are drawing blood, and she bites HARD. She is jumping around, knocking things off my dressers, tearing things apart, and she has this WILD look in her eye. This is NOT her normal self! Is it the medication? Will it stop when she's off it? She's been taking it 3 days now. She NEVER sleeps anymore, just gallops around the house at mach3 all day! Please, I'm going out of my mind!

It may be the medication...she may be having an allergic reaction. I would definitley call the vet. They might want you to bring her in but will for sure have some suggestions for you. If you are having a hard time even touching her, some vets do house calls and the vet may be able to come to you.
It's very odd for a cat to go from settling in to a new home and adjusting normally to then being crazy. Is the medication the only thing that has changed in the past couple of days? I would really be calling the vet and getting things checked out.
In the meantime, give her some things to scratch on to try and save your poor hands! ie: any old pieces of carpet you have around the house.
Sorry I couldn't be more help but I hope she is feeling better - and you too!

most of your problems will be fixed once he's fixed. clip his claws and get the sticky pads for furniture to stop him from clawing. get a scratching post. get a squirt bottle w/ water and spray him when he jumps up on stuff but don't let him see you do it. the sticky mats will work really well for tables and counters. my guess w/ the bathroom is it's his and he doesn't want someone in there. 2 of my cats hate plastic bags. the plunger and broom sorry but thats funny and chances are you won't change them. every cat has fears! the toys, get the very small mice a cat fav! also try a small tub of catnip, rub the toys in it and dust it off. like kids some toys just don't interest them. you must care somewhat for this cat or you would have got rid of him long ago. if he still drives you nuts after being fixed, make sure you let the new owners know. if not he may end up in a home w/ someone that can't handle it. then he will either be abused or kicked outside.

I can't say for sure about the medication, but she sounds like a typical 5 month old kitten to me. Kittens are nutso. They are manical and naughty and mischievous and royal pains in the behind! Perhaps the medication has made her feel better so she can behave like a normal kitten whereas she was too sick to do so before. I'm not sure if you've spayed her yet, but that will certainly help calm her down. In the meantime, you really need to offer her "play therapy". Set aside a specific time of the day, twice a day, for playtime. Play with her using an interactive toy until you tire her out. Have her lying on her side panting in exhaustion. Not only will this bond her to you, but it will help focus all that pent up energy onto her toys instead of mischief. Granted, she will still get into trouble now and then, but the more you can direct her energy yourself, the less likely she is to get into trouble on her own. And don't worry, she'll grow out of it, but remember she is definitley a normal, naughty kitten. Good luck.

Usually amoxycillin is a safe antibiotic... my cats have had this antibiotic before and never had any adverse reaction. Two things I can think of: your kitty might be stressed out because of being forced to take medicine - she's young and doesn't understand what that was all about. Two, she really may be reacting adversely to amoxycillin. If the latter, you can call your vet and tell him about cat's behavior and most likely he'll prescribe a different antibiotic. If the first, then no matter what antibiotic she is given she'll be zooming about like crazy. Get some catnip and see if that'll calm her down. Also, she'll tire sooner or later after working all that energy out. At any rate, call your vet - he shoudn't charge you any extra.

I'm not sure if it is the medicine but you should really check with your vet if you have any concerns. I got a kitten too not long ago and at first she was really good and cuddly then all of a sudden she has turned into this phsyco creature!!! And she isn't even on any medication. You need to be firm with her Not nasty or anything but you need to let her know that she is hurting you. Normally a quick little tap on the bottom and a sharp NO will help. Also i suggest that you invest in a scratching post, they work wonders!!!!

The antibiotics sound like they are making her hyper. I would call the vet back and tell them what is going on with your cat since starting the meds. They may need to switch it or stop it all together and go a different route. In the meantime, get some soft paws nail caps to prevent scratching.

You should call the vets office and ask them about possible side affects for the particular antibiotic she's on.
Without knowing what she's taking it will be hard to get a proper answer from anyone.
Besides, your vet should give free advice over the phone. Most will, ecspecially if it is in regards to a medication they prescribed.

I sincerely HOPE that you did NOT "self-medicate" (as, in: finding something at Wal-Mart for cats), but that you've had this cat to the vet. Stop that medication right away and make an EMERGENCY phone call to your vet NOW! Cats are super-sensitive to any/all types of medications, and you need the Dr. to see her again--NOW! Good Luck--and don't worry about "bothering" him/her (the vet) on the weekend--you're paying them enough to be a full time staff-member. Just, as they say--"Get 'er done"!

I used to work in a vet's office, and yes, meds can affect behaviour in animals. During this trying time give your kitty lots of interesting toys. I suggest a laser pointer. You can get one at any pet store. It is great for runnign off that extra energy and she will calm down once off the meds. You also might make sure kitty isn't getting too much cat nip. Meds can increase the hallucinogenic properties in nip. Hope this helps. Feel free to email me with any more questions on your kitty. good luck.

I don't think that ur cat is going crazy due to the amoxycillan. This drug is a broad spectrum drug used widely in many species to treat bacterial infections I have never known it to make cats crazy it doesn't have the necessary ingredients in it to facillitate this. I think ur cat is probably just feeling alot better now that it is being treated and getting back into everyday kitten activities. i don't feel u have any need to worry just try to be firm with ur kitten and teach her the rules of the house.May u have many happy years together......Hope this helps
