If you'll be renting cars, public liability insurance is included in the base rate. You will be held responsible for any damage to the vehicle unless you take the waiver and pay the additional fee. Many credit cards offer this coverage as a cardholder benefit, read your cardholder agreement to be sure.

If you will be driving the cars of friends or relatives, they are already insured -- or at least they should be. Car insurance covers the car and all licensed drivers who have the owner's permission to operate the vehicle. You don't need any additional insurance in that case.

Some travel insurance policies provide additional cover; check with your travel agent before you leave home. Travel insurance isn't very popular in the US and it may be difficult or impossible to find once you arrive.
