I have an American friend with a limited budget who bought many items here in Thailand to sell in the US. He bought nothing from markets to maximize profit. He told me that he gained the greatest profit from the wholesale purchase and sale of silk. He purchased silk directly from people in small northeast Thai villages who produce it from silkworms to the final woven material. He was able to order specific colors and patterns. There are many small Thai villages to choose from, but you would have to be willing to go into areas that are rarely visited by foreigners. It's quite safe, but few if any will speak English, so you would need to bring a Thai friend with you to be a guide and translate for you. My friend told me that his profit was greater than 500% excluding his travel expenses. I'm sure you can't mean that you have "virtually no money"; if so, you wouldn't be able to travel here or buy any products, no matter how cheap.

ok - depending on how small a scale you are starting.. I used to import from here and i doubt things are much different... Anything that is cloth though legal to import, is discouraged by customs and they have more than a little power/control.. I learned that any fabric could delay my shipments indefinitely...

And so, any easy item to start with might be sterling silver.. There are many wholesale shops on Kho Sarn Rd in Bkk.. It is easily carried or shipped etc.. it is lighter weight than the above recommended silk... good luck

Many things can sell well, because they are cheap to acquire in Thailand. Things like food stuff, vegetables, frozen seafood, clothes, ceramics, arts and crafts etc. In fact many people are doing so.

I would recommend you take a trip to Chatuchak weekend market and have a look at the items they sell there. Find which ones will appeal to the US market and buy in bulk. There are couriers companies there to help you ship back to US directly too.

You can email me at thaitourinfo@yahoo.com if you like.

Thai stick was very popular in the late seventies when the US cracked down on Columbian gold.
