Before the Tower of Babel, there was only one language, and therefore no need to speak in tongues. People did not speak in tongues or other languages by the power of the Holy Spirit until the New Testament era. Speaking in tongues, according to the Holy Bible merely means to speak in other languages. The root word for language is identical to the root word for tongue: LENGUE (not sure about my spelling--I think it is from Latin). On the day of Pentacost, the people were given the gift to speak in tongues, or other languages because there were so many foreign Jews visiting...it was a gift for outreach to the Jews who would be returning to their own parts of the world later...and would have the knowledge of the Good News to spread throughout the world. Some people later were overcome by their own emotional fits and started babeling (no pun intended--since babel comes from the Tower of Babel) which was remarked on by Paul at some point. Now in the 21st Century...there are skads of churches which overlook the direction the apostles took about speaking in tongues being one of the least important gifts, and that not everyone has the same gifts. Speaking in tongues is over rated according to the Holy Bible....

The Tower of Babel has nothing to do with speaking in tongues.
You receive your prayer language with evidence of speaking in tongues by the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Act 1:8

They all spoke one language that had existed at the time of Adam, the Adamic language. Then it was confounded, and they all started speaking in tongues, and the people could not understand each other as Babylon was being destroyed.

The expression "talk in tongues" is nothing more than a Greek idiom for foreign languages. In Sumeria, there was only one language. World wide, there were many.

What do you mean by tongues? If you mean baptized in the Holy Spirit...I don't think so. But if you mean diff languages no.
I think we had one tongue, one common language.
