There have been reports of anesthesiologists refusing epidurals to women with lower back tattooing feeling that the needle insertion will displace pigment in the dermis and push it into the spinal fluid.
As far as anyone can determine, there is no scientific proof of this. My personal opinion is some medical professional made that up so his/her daughter wouldn't get one, haha!!

Yes you can, in fact, many tattoo parlors carry them within the shop, you need to get the artist's permission of course in order to do so. I'm sorry to tell you this, but when I was 16 and got parental consent for a tattoo, I requested topical anesthetic as well and it did nothing to subdue the pain. It took a few more tattoos without the anesthetic to realize this, but as it is only topical, and is not injected into your dermis, results are minimal. If you've never gotten a tattoo before, you really can't say much about your pain threshold. Ive seen 350 pound bikers get ink and cry, yet 80 pound beach blonde girls nearly sleep through it. Don't be afraid, most artists are very patient if you want them to take a break or if you are nervous. Hope this helps and good luck!

that is an urban legend! the only way they will not give you an epidural and you have a tattoo is if it is not healed yet but then why would you have a fresh tattoo when you're 9 mos pregnant? exactly. i have researched this before on medical websites because i am working on a full back tattoo.

I had 2 children after my lower back got done. I had an epidural with both of them. It can cause the tattoo to raise a little...but they wont refuse it to you. (and this was recent...my oldest is only 2...my youngest is 14 months) and if it raises...it goes back down after a month...or at least it did with mine.

It doesn't matter if you have tattoos. I have a tattoo on my lower back and I had an epidural. And I'm fine.

Myth...........as long as the tattoo is completely healed there is not a problem getting a epidural. Just google tattoos and epidurals...............plenty of sites to support this

Your friend is wrong. Epidurals (which is what I assume you are talking about) can be administered with or without scar damage (tattoos in this case).
