I routinely review resumes and employment applications for the owner of the company. In many fields, not having an actual high school diploma ( and having a GED) does hurt your chances for employment and advancement in a company. I would not recommend this route if it can be avoided! I would look into joint courses that many high schools offer- you can go to community college and get high school credit as well.

No, it won't hurt him at all. Once he takes the GED he can get into a community college and certain Universities. Infact he doesn't even need the GED to start college at a community campus.

I did it and it didn't hurt me. By leaving high school early, I felt more challenged by my courses. By going to community college for two years, I saved half the cost of college. I graduated earlier than my fellow students and started work earlier. No one has ever asked me: "Did you go to the expensive 4-year college all four years?" However, tell him to check into joint programs between the high school and the college: it may be possible to take summer classes at the college before he's graduated high school, and to continue doing that his final year of high school. He may enjoy that. I am a little sorry I missed my senior year of high school, although interestingly I run into people all the time who don't realize that I wasn't there that final year.

I don't have a GED and went to college. They made me take a test to see what I knew. I cant remember what it was called but it all worked out. Though I would suggest getting one because a lot of employers require it.
