I usee two types of sharpening equipment. Much depends on how dull a knife is when I start. I employ a soft washita whet, Yes Whet, not wet. stone to start the process. the most difficult part of this is keeping a consistant angle. After the stone process I use a spyderco triangle set of crockery sticks. The gray stones are more coarse, and the white stones are for honing to a razor edge that will shave your arm hairs. I constantly keep the blade wiped off and check the edge in a bright light in the edge. Dull spots will appear white and need to be addressed again, until you can not get a reflection.

Purchase a sharpening steal at your local store. Wal-Mart usually has one. Another is a hand-held sharpener with a v-groove sharpener at the tip. It's shaped like a pistol grip and has a guard around your fingers. Mine was around $5. It makes knives razor sharp in about 5 swipes. serrated knives require a special stone with edges contoured for specifically sized serrated knives.

You can try a sharpening stone, first the course side then the smooth side. This takes alot of practice to get it right. Then use a sharpening steel to align the edge.Try a knife that you don't mind damaging first because you will by not knowing what your doing.Practice,practice....

try going to a local meat/butcher shoppe and ask them if they do knife sharpenings. you can normally get them for like 4 or 5 dollars a knife and normally will last you a year or so.
