I have a lot of REAL MEDIA files (.rm) stored in my computer, and I want to split/cut the videos into several smaller parts so it's easier to upload them online. I can't find any free softwares that will allow me to edit realmedia files completely, and a lot of the video editing softwares don't accept .rm files. Although some do offer free trials, they only do like 20 or 50% conversion of each file. Does anyone have ideas on how I can work and edit .rm files? I tried converting into mpg formats and stuff, takes toooooooo long, and slows down computer during converting process.

Real Media files are protected under copyright , same with a certain wmv format , same would probably apply to quicktime movie files

so, i'd recommend running it through a re-encode, then editing it

i'd recommend IMTOO mpeg encoder 3 http://www.imtoo.com/mpeg-encoder.html
where it supports directshow filters
so there's basically a no fail process

you can install CCCP http://www.cccp-project.net/
quicktime alternative http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/quicktime_alternative.cfm
real time alternative http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/real_alternative.cfm

and run it through IMTOO mpeg encoder 3, with "add directshow file"

you have to convert it to a format that you can work with, usually mpeg4 divx / xvid
don't forget to fool around with the _bitrate_ and video size (resolution). this influences the speed of encoding as well as the quality of your final video
right click on a file > show file information after you've added in, then you can compare your specified new bitrate and adjust it according to the rm one.

Imtoo mpeg encoder 3 is not free, but you can be shady with google
