how hard is it to create your own religion and how long does it ussually take until the government accepts it as an honest to goodness religion?

It's easy to set up a religion. It's easy to start a church. You need no specific credentials, and you simply follow the rules of your state for incorporation as a non-profit organization and church.
Being recognized by the government isn't that easy. In fact, different parts of the government will have different rules. For example: Patrick Stewart was a Guardsman in Iraq who died for his country in a time of war. According to the Department of Defense, and his dog tags, his religion was Wiccan. The Department of Veteran Affairs though, does not recognize Wicca as a religion, even though the DOD does. President Bush stated that "I don't think Wicca is a religion" and discouraged the DOD from recognizing it as such.
Patrick Stewart's wife waited for well over a year to get a tombstone with the Pentacle (the emblem of his faith) on it as Wicca is still not officially recognized.

There are state laws and codes that need to be researched and adhered to in order to legally establish a religion. At least, to be recognized as a legal entity, to have status and exemption and all that.
It differs from state to state - you should be able to do a search on your states government site. GL!

Well you would have to get alot of people to believe the religion that you want to make so I imagine that it would take a couple or even mor years.

joe: There are millions upon millions of religions out there. What one serves, is his or her god. The question you pose fits everyone drawing breath ! Drugs, sex, booze, careers, education, cars, jobs, intellectualism, the biggie $, fame, music, etc., etc. are all gods which are worshipped daily by 99.9% of the world's populace. Yes; - and governments accept them as legitimate religions, too !!!
