My father in law is addicted to drinking. My husband is very much worried with his health. he is retired from job 4 years ago. Now we are planning to divert his mind to some sort of work which is not risky. He will temporarily live with us for 6 months in NOIDA.
Please suggest us some ideas with which we can make him a normal person. Waiting for your suggestions.......

First i would suggest you to find out what is that which is worrying him soo much which is compelling him to drink!Normally a person drinks more than his capacity to overcome the stress he is going thru.Try to solve the problem at home by giving him more care and attension. If he has crossed this level then please take him to "Rehabilitation Center" which must be available in your city. The Doctors in such centres help you to solving such problems and make a person come out of such addictions.
I would also like to tell you that a small shop (like STD, Cool drinks, or chocholates, pasteries etc) will divert his mind for sometime but seeing a Rehab Doc is a must. So please rush!!!!!

A habit of drinking may be because of some tensions or some other reasons. Consult some good doctor. Talk with him. Spend most of your time with him. Go for a family trip. May be this will help you out. Explain the hhaphazards of drinking.

well i just can tell you that try giving your father in law something more important than his booze. i was a habitual drinker used to drink daily and often beyond limits, "AA" is useless if one is not willing to quit. during this regular drinking i was married and my wife gave birth to my daughter, around six months after her birth, i had sprained my leg and was on bed rest for a week and in that one week i was off drinks. Every evening was spent playing with my daughter and looking at her antics. This made me realise that i had wasted a lot of time in drinks when my real happiness is right at home. I have not stopped drinking have the occasional ones but its well within limits. hence i m telling you to give something to your father in law that means more to him than his daily dose. It can be valuable time, asking questions and making him feel important, if you've kids telling them to spend quality time with their grandfather. A man doesn't always need stress to drink regularly, for him the drink matters more than his life. So give him a life thats is much more engrossing than the drink. hope it helped you.

I can some giude lines which may help to your dather law:

Try to convince him and aks him what is the for drinking. And also ask is he hiding anything. I think he is trying to some bad moments. Convince him by saying If U drink u won't forget those days but your health will get upset..

One he has to want to stop. If he doesn't Then if he starts hurting his self or others from his alcoholism you can have him committed, Which is harsh I've seen people quit and then start back.** AA ** helps but he can't have any alcohol around him to tempt him they have a 12 step program that can turn him back in to a normal person. With a lot of support and love he can make it work.

Firstly find out the reason for his drinking. if any proper reason is found then try to work on it , if not then try keep him always happy like take him on a pilgrimage tour or let him play with his grandchildren when they are free . if no such things works then try to make him feel guilty of his drinking by saying that "let us all drink" and all of you can sit with him and ask him for some wine.

DRINKING IS A DISEASE You cant make someone do something especially if they are not ready. The only way to quit is for them to want to. And sometimes that takes them hitting "rock bottom" untill they realize what an impact it has on not only their live but others as well.

He seems to old to quit the habit now but you may try to contact the local hospital and check for NGOs that work in this regard and take their assistance in the matter.

Gather together with the entire family and do an INTERVENTION. If you don't know how contact your local AA or ALANON - they will help you. Good Luck and God Bless You All. It's a tough one.
