First and foremost, we need to define excessive barking. Dogs bark. It’s a simple and natural fact. When strangers arrive at your door step, Fluffy will most likely voice their arrival out to you. This is acceptable. In fact, you should praise Fluffy for being such a good guard dog. However, if Fluffy’s yodeling continues non stop til your visitors had long gone home, that is excessive. Really excessive. Barking in the dead of the night is deemed excessive as well. And frequent barking for no apparent reason is excessive as well.

Before you start the training, please find out the cause of Fluffy’s excessive barking. Once the cause is determined, you are halfway to success.

Now we recommend some basic training tips for your dog. Remember, for each different cause, a different type of training catering to that cause will be more effective than others. The basic training tips given below are very general.

Method 1 - Fill a spray bottle with water. Whenever Fluffy gets too vocal, spray him with some water. Most likely, the surprise element will make him stop. Praise generously as soon as there is silence.

Method 2 - Fill an empty can with coins or pebbles. When Fluffy barks too much, shake the can vigorously. This should silence Fluffy instantaneously. Praise. Take note that dogs get used to the sound quickly, so this method may not work after a while.

Method 3 - Teaching Fluffy to bark on command can be your solution too. Create a scenario whereby you are sure Fluffy will bark his head off. As soon as he starts, praise him. You can keep saying "Speak" as Fluffy yodels away. As soon as he stops, say "Stop"” and praise him generously again. If you are patient and consistent, Fluffy will get the hang of it soon enough. With that, you should be able to start and stop Fluffy’s barking with the appropriate commands.

First, JennaL needs to still be in jail if what she/he said was true!!!!!! There are laws against that you know!!!
Second, yelling at a dog only excites it more. The best suggestion I read was from the pit bull picture person.
The dog should know you are alpha, staying calm will help the dog calm down and don't ask it what it's barking at b/c it doesn't matter. If it's unwanted behavior, make it known and correct the dog. You own the space you are in, not the dog, act like it.
It will still bark if it's defending the family from danger. They can sense when the person(s) who are outside mean harm or not and will act accordingly.

If it is really a huge issue, there is an operation that a vet can do to mute a dog, the bark becomes a whisper. But this is only for someone with no other solution. It's not a very nice thing to take anyone's voice even if it's an animal, but if it's the only option it CAN be done. I don't know if it ever SHOULD be.

no, you seriously can take the "bark out of the dog" .. my cousins had adopted a dog that had SOMTHING thats legal removed...but only partially, so when ever it barks its A LOT quieter, but its still able to bark...it doesnt hurt the dog at all too!
its a very humane thing as well.
as long as you take it up with a vet.

You can't take the bark out of a dog but the dog could take a BITE out of you if you try!! Try spraying the dog with a water hose whenever it barks and yell Shut UP!! Do this each and everytime it barks and he should get the idea! But when someone breaks in and steals all the things in your BF house and the dog doesn't bark to warn you or to scare the intruders don't come bitchin' to us!!

Try paying attention to what causes it.

Seriously--WHY is it barking? Boredom? Illness? You need to figure out WHY before you can find the cure.

I have a very opinionated and vocal dog. When he is outside barking his head off I simply go out and remind him that he is being "loud little bear." He's a small, intelligent breed so he understands what is being said to him. And it works quite well for the most part.

Bottom line is I interact with my dog! I talk, talk talk to him....besides walk, play and cuddle.

Good luck, cuz mine's a barker too, and we' make it work really well.

They sell different varieties of "bark collars" at pet stores like PetSmart.

Some of them emit a light shock to the dog whenever it barks; this startles them, and they soon learn not to bark.

Some of them spray a bit of citronella whenever the dog barks, which is unpleasant to them.

And another kind emits a high-pitched sound that you can't hear, but annoys the dog.

If you don't object to any of these methods and other attempts at discipline have failed, use them. They react to the bark a lot quicker and more effectively than you can, and the dog gets the message much quicker.

You should find a boyfriend who has the same interests as you...such as no love of animals.

While dogs can be debarked....you sound like a psycho...who should be in a mental health facility.

please get help for yourself. There is help out there..and you can live a fulfilling life if you just get help.

Stay away from animals....they have enuff troubles without people with psychological problems adding to them.

Please...just work on healing yourself.

Take it's bark out? Yeah, watch The Little Mermaid and do what Ursela did to Ariel to take her voice away.....

A can with coins in it to make a louder, scarier sound works. Or a spray bottle with water. And if you get desperate and the man won't do anything about it, drug it with something to make it go to sleep. Just make sure it's a very little amount. Good Luck!
