chows are not mean. they are very protective and are usually a 1 person dog. they make excellent guard dogs, but they do have a dominant, protective nature. they are not for the inexperienced dog owner.

I've had two chow mixes which both ended up being really great dogs, great dispositions and all. The Chow breed on the other hand, like most other people have said, have more of an agressive disposition and is rather unpredictable. Breeds that have been given a bad rep, such as Pits, Rotts, Dobs, and Chows, are unfairly judged because personally I believe it's all in how you raise your pet, with the breeds that have an aggressive tendency a firmer hand most likely will be needed, but all you need is good training and socialization.

Just like Sgarison, I was standing out side when a friend came over with his chow. I was standing there talking to him , the next thing I knew , I was being attracted. I had serve bites on my arms. If I had not put my arms up the way I did I would of been bitten in the face ! I found out at the hospitable that here in North East Ohio, 90 % of all dog bites are from chows !!! I was later told that dog had bitten five other people. So to this day I do not care for chows

I had a girl chow dog named princess when I was younger. Some people that lived near me had three dogs and I was supposed to get the little dog but they moved off and left all three one of them being pregnant so we keep all three for awhile, I being a animal lover loved all three and never had a problem with the chow being around humans or animals. The chow was very smart and loving. When the other dog had her puppies she didn't want much to do with them and I guess the chow's instincts took over and she took care of them. At that time she would bite because of the puppies. So I think chows can be just as good as any other dog.

I have a dog that is part Chow she is also part German Shepherd and she is not a mean dog she is the most loving and patient dog that I have ever met. She is very protective of her people and her territory but not in an aggressive way she is an excellent watch dog she bark's when someone comes on her turf but once she smells them and is sure they don't mean any harm she is eager to make friends. She loves children we have even done an animal education program at the school's in our area and if she was tired during the speaking part she had a nap in a room full of children but when show-off and do her trick's time came she was more than ready and absolutely loved all the attention from the kids she also does pet therapy at the local Old Age Home and loves to visit our neighbor who is well into her ninety's and get a good ear rub. But is most loyal to me I've had her since she was about 8 weeks old and she'll be 10 in June, and I wouldn't trade her for a million dollars. If you spend lots of time with a Chow or any other type of dog and treat it with kindness and give it lots of love it will never be mean. Mean dogs aren't born that way their trained to be mean and one bad dog gives the whole breed a bad reputation.

I think they are absolutely beautiful. I have never owned one and probably never will. A chow dog is the only dog that has ever bitten me for no reason. He came up to me like he was interested so I put my hand down low so he could smell me and he just latched on!! So Needless to say I am TERRIFIED of any chow dog I meet, I know I shouldn't be they aren't all bad. I just admire their beauty from afar now!!!

As a breed, a well-bred, well-socialized Chow can be a great pet. Not the ideal breed for everyone, but for someone who understands their temperament, they can be wonderful companions. They can be standoffish and aloof, and their body language can be difficult to read. As ChowWelfare.com says, "It helps to 'think cat' in order to understand Chows!"

A poorly-bred or poorly-socialized Chow, on the other hand, can be a danger to himself and others. Unfortunately that is more the result of a bad owner than a bad breed.

Years ago I had chows, and they were great. Mine were protective, good watchdogs, and tolorant of people who came to my house. They are not overly friendly, but they are not mean. Basically, they minded their own business. I feel people have a very wrong idea about the breed. Alot of how a dog acts, depends on how they are raised and trained.

I find them very unpredictable. I have been around Chows and actually have met many aggressive ones that have been put down. Some came from good homes but from bad aggression lines others came from bad homes. I have met some nice ones that make wonderful family dogs but I just find they are very easy to turn mean so yes they are considered one of the aggressive dogs in many states.

I don't like them. I always feel unsafe around them. I had one dog that was part-chow and he went after strangers. Also, my hubby had one that bit a child in the head before and had to have stitches. I think they are in general a dangerous breed. I am sure there are always exceptions.
