I honestly think you need to spend some time reseaching dogs. The library has books that describe each breed, their assets and their negative sides. Every dog has both, some have one more than another. Generally, small breeds, frou-frou breeds bark more than larger breeds. Larger breeds need more time to be trained because of their size. Mastiff's and St. Barnards hardley ever bark, but their average life span if 7 years. The larger the dog, the shorter the life span, and the smaller the breed, the longer the life span. Maybe a few trips to the local pound can help you out. These "mutts" can be the greatest dogs in the world. You may very well find a dog their that doesn't bark and is in deserate need of a home. Good luck in your search.

Chihuahuas and poodles actually tend to bark MORE than other breeds. :) Most toy breeds bark a lot. So do beagles, terriers, and herding dogs.
Some "manly" breeds that aren't usually very barky: Golden Retreivers, Rottweilers, Boxers, Bulldogs. Basenjis are called "the barkless dog" but they do make other noises besides barking.
More importantly: There are individuals within any breed. I'm sure you could find a beagle somewhere in the world that doesn't like barking his fool head off for hours a day. (I can't imagine it, but it must be possible...) And most puppies bark a lot more than they will once they grow up, so adopting an adult would help you get past that stage -- not to mention the chewing phase. Also, there are some things that will turn most ANY dog into a barker (or a sofa eater, or a pee-in-your-favorite-shoeser, etc) -- boredom and anxiety.
So, whatever dog you decide on, make sure he gets plenty of exercise, plenty of fun, and gets to spend plenty of time with you. The less barky dogs tend to be the bigger dogs, and many of them require quite a lot of exercise to keep them tired and happy, so be sure you do your research before you coop one up in an apartment for long!

Frou-frou dogs bark the most! I don't know of a specific breed that is quiet. My mom has a lab who never barks, but I know other labs that do. Someone told me that chows don't bark much, but my chow barks ALL the time! I know that wasn't very helpful.....

Golden retrievers hardly ever bark!!! They only bark when they sense some kind of danger. My little golden retrievers, lacy and ceaser once saved our neighbors house from being robbed, they never bark and suddenly after having them for 3 whole years without barking even once they started barking so loudly they woke up 3 houses on the road, they woke up our neighbors too and they saw that a robber was outside their house, he didn't go to jail but they say he got into a black car and rode away. They are really the mans best friend type of dog for sure, you could never doubt it for even 1 second!! but they are able to con you into doing things by acting really cute!! I'd say the perfect dog for you is most definetly a GOLDEN RETRIEVER!!!!

that guy under me says get a lab. no dont. i have 2 and they are ALWAYS barking, and they like to protect their owners so if they hear something like walking in the hallway or knocking on the door, they will bark their heads off!! i love labs, but not for an apartment hahah..
and u cant want too much of a big dog becuase those dogs need to be outside in yards a lot... and apartments dont really have yards, but urs might!!
hmmmm tryy.....besenji, husky, cocker spaniel, bulldogs, are all the quiestest dogs you'll find. besenji especially. they CAN bark, they just dont really do it. and its not exactly a bark its like a yodel. haha. but yea... hope that works. bull dog can be nice too because they dont need a lot of exercise, and they are very quiet!!! and they like to cuddle, and be aggressive. and their really cute!!!!
if u ever decide on one you should email me cause i wanna no! :)

Try a Basenji... they don't bark really, just make a small sound and are great for apartments. They are short haired too, so grooming is a minumum. See the link below for more info...

Basenjis and Shiba Inus are great breeds if you want a dog that's more quiet, like the others said about the Basenji, the noise they make is more of a yodel, and the Inu I've heard is the same.

Basenjis cannot bark but they can yodel and make some noises that could make a person wish they'd just bark. I think they are neat dogs and want one myself and have researched them a great deal. So its true they don't bark but they can make noise just so you are aware.
