I was just wondering because there is that one poster that posts msg's about coming to Islam and joining the polygamous way.... Is that the Islam that most people belong to, or is that a separate sect, or is that nothing at all to do with Islamic tradition.

In the US you cannot practice polygamy regardless of your religion.

As far as I know, Islam generally allows polygamy, but only if you can support multiple partners. This is because marrying a woman, and taking care of her, is considered a good deed. However, there are some Islamic countries that do not allow polygamy.

Not a Muslim though, so not 100% sure...

Islam allows up to four wives and we need to see the reasoning behind it. First of all we all know that there are more women then men. Many factors contribute to this including wars, accidents (men tend to take more risks), violence (again its mostly men). And not to mention the number of men that are gays? From what I read about 30% of men in NY are gays, that including all other factors means that there are millions of more men than women. Who are these women going to marry?

That being said Islam greatly discourages polygamy. If there is even a slight doubt that a man won't keep his wives happy and be fair to all of them then Quran says to marry only one. And we all know that women are most probably not going to be happy with more than wife and that alone means a man should not marry more than one in almost all instances.

Islam encourages every bachelor to get married when he/ she is past pubery. Muslim men are expected to stay married with one wife and takes on another if he can afford to in term of physical abilty or wealth as well as spiritually.
If he cannot equally satisfy both wife, he better stay married with only one, which is the popular choice of most muslim men. My emphasis is polygamous IS NOT the way of life propagated by our Prophet Muhammad SAW.
Thank you, I hope this would clear your curiousity.

No.

Different people preceive things differently. So that goes with the teaching.

Of course, there are many who misused the teaching into selfish means by distorting it. That goes into marriage in Islam ... that is no saying in orginal teaching but it is a law set by them to have a maximum of 4 wifes (with clauses) to control to ancient polyamous marriage of one to countless.

After all, for all religion, the teachings are more or less the same - for the betterment of one's well being.

I don't think the modern day Islam's are polygamous but they seem to have been in ancient days.

Yes, they are. Some Muslim men can have as many as twenty wives and six or seven dozen children. Islam isn't a bad religion at all, but polygamy in Islam is more along the lines of being practiced in Middle Eastern countries.

Muslim men are allowed up to 4 wives. Obviously very few do take that many for sound demographic reasons.
