I did the same thing. It took forever for that black to grow out.
I did ask the hairdresser every time I went for a cut if I could do something to get the black out. They have a process to do it, but it takes ALL color out of your hair, and it costs quite a bit to have it done, and then you have to re-dye. There is no way for you to dye over it and lighten it. Your only choice is to dye the top black again, (Don't do it!) or wait for the bottom to grow long enough that you can cut it off.
OK, I do have one other suggestion, although I never tried it. You could get highlights so that the colors all blend a bit better. Then, when your hair is longer, you can cut the bottom off, and re-dye the highlights to a color closer to your natural shade.

I think you should wait until you've contacted a hairdresser. It's better to have hair that is different shades than damaged hair. There are color brands that have 800's numbers where you can get free advice. Look at your box or the website before you do anything, please. Because chances are brown won't cover your black too well and you'll end up with the same problem.

Chances are very HIGH the brown will not cover the blackthe number one rule of color COLOR will NOT Lift COLOR, meaning the medium brown is lighter than the black whic is a very hard thing to lift is not gonna lift the black, If you can't go the salon ATLEASE PLEASE do NOT buy th eover the counter color! It is worse on your hair especially the black most over the counter dyes contain added stuff that is worse for your hair, Go to sallys, look at the ION brand colors and pick you out one, then ask the person who workds there who is a licenced cosmetolgist what deloper they suggest for the color you picked on the color you have they will either tell you 20 or 30 and show you where it is and tell you exactly what you need to do they are very helpful and dont mind. Its what they are there for. Trust me you will be glad you did Also while you are there if you need a deep conditioning treatment to restore your hair back to health ask them for some AlphaGee. Good Luck-

It might or might not color brown due to you having black dye on it. Even though your color might of faded out, it's still there. If your looking for your hair to be an even shade (you will have to visit a stylist) it's not going to be. Once you put the color in, it will have a 2 toned effect.

the brown will definatley not cover the blacker parts of your hair. But you could possibly have a nice fading affect from dark brown to black if you actually dye it, but it could also be a total waste. To get all brown youll have to strip the black of its color, which will quite possibly turn your hair to an orangey bronze, and then you will be able to dye it all one color.
Or you could just dye it all black again. lol

I am very sorry to hear that your hair is "dying".It is a very sad but natural occurence.
I don't know why it should be "ligher" on top maybe it is your head peeking thru.
