is it something do with the size of the dog?

Yes, the size of the dog absolutely affects the size of her litters. Small dogs have less puppies than large dogs. Tiny dogs commonly have only one puppy at a time, rarely more than three or four. Very large dogs can easily have ten or more puppies at a time.

Most dogs could reasonably give birth to one or two litters a year (though their health and happiness would probably suffer!) for a big chunk of their lives. That's a whooooole lot of puppies.

First of all, dogs don't have babies. They have puppies. Human beings have babies. For example, you were a baby at one time, not a puppy. Although you were probably as cute as a puppy.

As for how many puppies they have, I don't think the size of the dog makes any difference. It depends on how many puppies it has in each litter (every time she gets pregnant). And how often she has a litter. I would not recommend letting her get pregnant any more often than once every two years. If she gets pregnant every year, it will take its toll on her health and she will die at a younger age.

Also, I think there are laws to protect the dog. I think the laws were written to prevent people from abusing animals as is done in puppy mills. A puppy mill is a business where people get dogs pregnant repeatedly, feed them poorly, and generally abuse them in other ways. The idea is to get as many puppies as possible from a dog without caring about it or its health. Each puppy represents money from people who will buy the puppy. And in a puppy mill, that's all the business owner is interested in. Money and more money. The poor dogs really suffer.

If you are inquiring because you are thinking of getting into the dog breeding business, please check out dog breeding on the web, and get educated about it. Don't get sucked into the puppy mill routine. You'll end up in jail.

No, all dogs reproduce in the same way, the pups size at birth differ, according to size.

A female is able to reproduce every 9 wks and typically births 5-8 puppies.

none if you're a responsible pet owner, because your dog will be spayed. and if you're a responsible breeder you will know and plan for the answer and not have to ask it. but if you want to know how many puppies 1 unspayed dog can produce, take one female who has an average litter of 6 puppies. take nature into account and say 3 of those pups are female. and the 3 females are not spayed either. now in less than a year a single unspayed female can account for 12 unspayed dogs just from one litter. you can continue to do the math or take my word for it but a single UNspayed female dog and her descendants can produce 4,372 puppies in just 7 generations. yes over 4000 puppies. now why should you spay your dog?

It's everything to do with her size. And also how many times she is bred in her life.
