I actually used to have the same problem in high school. One day, much like you, it dawned on me that I had no idea why I was saying it, other than everyone else was. And it really doesn't sound overly intelligent. You had some great advise given by others here about concentrating on your speech and thinking before you speak. This might sound funny, too, but what about putting a rubber band on your wrist and giving it a light snap everytime you catch yourself saying "like?" I bet you stop really quick! I don't know, just a thought. You can do it. Now that you're aware of a speech pattern you're not happy with, you will change it on your own gradually. Good luck!

Slow down and pay attention to every word you say. Think carefully before and while you are speaking.

This is a lot of work at first, but after about a week, you'll find that your thoughts are clearer, your vocabulary is growing, you express yourself better and you stop saying like. You will also turn into a better listener.

Be aware each time your tongue starts the 'l' sound. Think about what you say before you say it. Try not to pause in the middle of a thought as you may add 'like' or 'um'. Speak in complete sentences.

Tell someone to tell you every time you say the word. Worked for me, will work for you.

just try to be aware of it. when you think about what you're saying it's easier to control what you say.
