I have read on one site that I could earn $50,000/ yr., and the employment rate is 100%. This seems too good to be true, and you know what they say about that....

OK, people, please (and I hope you won't take this the wrong way) don't tell me to follow my heart, etc. Right now, I am not making all that much money, but I am making as much as I can in the field I'm in. I want something different. I am not going to bother going into a field if I don't think I could enjoy it. But I need to make more money, and it is a concern. Otherwise I'd just pick a hobby I enjoy. Seriously, I need to know if this is a field where I can make a good living, or just keep earning just enough to live paycheck to paycheck.

I suggest paying special attention to developing techniques for clientele your age and over. So many cosmetologists train to make up young faces. Too many of them forget that older women want and need these services more than the young ones.

Once you have your training, open a booth at senior's centers, or in malls that have a large senior population, and advertise special rates for seniors. I betcha you'll be able to make more than an adequate income.

But honestly, you will get back what you put into it. If you are willing to do your research on locations, and work hard at developing a client base, you can do extremely well at this career. But be prepared for a high overhead. You will have to rent space from whatever mall or salon you work from. You will need to purchase all that makeup and tools. One woman mentioned insurance. I'm not sure you will need liability, but it can't hurt to carry something, just in case.

And if some woman comes in, spending $50 on a new makeup look, be prepared to present her with a small gift bag of samples of those products you used on her. If you can develop a good rapport with your cosmetic salesman, he might be able to get you those samples for free.

Well, I think it would be a great time! I'm back in school and I'm in my 40's but going into the health sciences.

My stylist seems to make a great living at it, renting her own booth and developed her clientele. She's very talented and knows her stuff. If you can afford to go to the best school, do that. You definitely want all the cutting-edge techniques! Go for it. Just be prepared to be your own boss, pay all the ensuing bills and you will need to worry about insurance and so forth.

Good luck.

It's been my experience that you should do something you like, not for the money. The money will follow if your heart is in it! So if it is something you'd like go for it, if not don't
