However:
You don't need any religion. They belong in an age where we knew nothing about the universe; now they have no purpose.
Please, please read "The God Delusion". I think you'll find you want to stay as far away from religion as possible.

You may be happy in either of these churches. I believe that the Lutherans were the first to break away from the Catholic church. Presbyterians also have many customs that will be familiar to you.
Go to a few of their Sunday services. Meet the people. See if you like what you see. Ask the pastors to talk with you. See if you can find some literature on each of these denominations, and do some studying.
Give each denomination enough of your time so that you can get aquainted with what's happening. Don't be too quick to judge. Pray about it, too. Just go to a quiet place, and ask God to lead you to the place where you should be. He will.
I was raised in the Salvation Army, but that was long ago. I now have become a Baptist because there were only 2 protestant churches in this area, and because my husband was raised in the Baptist church. It took me a few weeks to become comfortable with this church, as it certainly has different customs than what I grew up with. I am at ease with it now.

I would suggest doing your homework on Lutheranism and Presbyterianism. Visit some churches, talk with the ministers or even take an Adult Confirmation Class that studies the Lutheran or Reformed theology. My wife when she converted to an Adult Confirmation Class that was pretty helpful, since she was not raised Lutheran. At no time was it expected from the church or the minister that she had to convert (in order to go through the class). I do have to say it was helpful for me (being raised Lutheran) to brush up on things.
I also found that the doctrinal statements of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (http://www.wels.net/cgi-bin/site.pl?2601&collectionID=783) , the Evangelical Lutheran Synod and the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod helpful in my initial research. I have also attached two links in the "source section" of two books that were sent to me from a friend that were very helpful.

You make it sound like your are buying a new car. What's wrong with you. You either are a Christian or you are not. There is no religion involved in it.
When I was a young man, I got my mother's station wagon to drive for my first car. A station wagon. I drove it awhile till I figured out that I was not getting a girls. They didn't like the old wagon. It made them feel a bit strange to ride around in it.
So out went the wagon for a blue Buick with mag wheels. ( different religion ). This was no better and so it did not last long.
I then got a high compression big V8 car. ( again, different religion ) but this just got me in trouble. Tickets. Money out of pocket.
It wasn't till I found out someone I loved very much was dieing from cancer that everything change. I asked God to help me instead of religion.
You guess it, I found out straight from the Word of God that I was already ordained to be a Christian from before the foundations of this earth age.
Yep. God is the way, the truth, and the life through Jesus Christ the Lord. Stay away from the big, the proud, and the pretty. Humble yourself before the Lord and choose the station wagon. (Jesus Christ)><>

I would recommend really digging into the Bible. Pray for God to show you His message for you, and then look at different doctrines that fit what you have learned. Make sure they are preaching the gospel and not politics. Don't rush into anything, the process may take a while. A fast decision is rarely a good one. Visit different churches, even in the same denomination, you can't judge a whole denomination just by one church. If you are honest in your search and seek God with all your heart, He promises that you will find Him. Claim that promise as your own and step out in faith.

It totally depends on what you are looking for.
i am an anabaptist.
we believe that each person can speak directly to god.
we believe that Jesus was about reconcilation and peace.
in the sermon on the mount, there were few commands: but here they are: to be peacemakers and show mercy.
whatever you do, don't throw your brain away. god gave it to you for a reason. Jesus takes away your sin, not your mind.
If you goto a church and they seem like they have all the answers, run. Go somewhere were the people are down to earth and who seem like they care.
And don't go nuts and think the bible is perfect. nothing is perfect but god. The bible is great but is just the bible. it is not god. it is not a science textbook. it is the story of god' s people and what god did and does for his people.
catholics focus on the altar/mass/power of the pope.
most protestants focus on the bible and preaching.
I say focus on jesus.
Don't go somewhere where they DONT believe miracles happen.
and don't go somewhere that thinks that they happen all the time.
don't go somewhere that thinks satan is a myth but don't go to a church that talks about the devil alot. Many churches are more exicted about fearing the devil than loving god and their neighbor.
If the preacher drives an expensive car, leave.
Or ask him why he does that when people are starving.
Jesus is about peace, love, mercy, kindness, hope, faith.
he is about being honest that you sometimes are a piece of crap and need to change some things. he is about personal integrity, resonsibility and wholeness, called holiness.
go somewhere where the music and discussion connect you to god. and if you don't "feel" anything, don't sweat it. feelings are great. but what matters is openness. Talk to spiritual people you know. Don't pick the smartest or the holiest. Or the most successful. Pick the ones who seem to really care about you, others, and themselves.
I like methodism, anglicanism, society of friends, emergent churches,
I listen to how people pray. If they pray like they think god CAN answer their prayers, that is great. if they pray like he has to, that is scary.
Ask the folks at church if they want to go out for beer. At my church we like to go hang out after the service.

It's so simple. It's all about Jesus Christ. Do you have a bible at home? Take some time and sit down with it; read Matthew, Mark, Luke, John. These truths will speak to you. He is the only name under heaven by which anyone might be saved.
And be very careful with any suggestions that hint not to trust the bible; it is the inspired word of God. That is the way we come to know about the Lord, the character of God, and how He wants us to live.

francine: Focus on a relationship with Jesus Christ, which will lead you into SPIRITUALITY. What I am saying is this. More Jesus less religion. Ask Jesus Christ to place you in the church [faith] He wants you to be in. You may try several faiths but ultimately, you will "fit in" where He [Jesus] wants you to be. The Christian life is a spiritual growth process with which Jesus obviously, has begun in you. Follow His lead ... and you will never "thirst" for a place to be. All the best to you "francine" !!!
