Even today the number of those killed, military and civilian, in the period covered (1959-1975) is open to debate and uncertainty. Here are 3 referenced works with their estimates:
Harry G. Summers, The Vietnam War Almanac. Novato CA: Presidio Press, 1985. reports U.S. killed in action, died of wounds, died of other causes, missing and declared dead - 57,690
Marc Leepson, ed, Webster's New World Dictionary of the Vietnam War. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1999. reports U.S. killed in action, etc. - 58,159
Edward Doyle, Samuel Lipsman, et al, Setting the Stage. Boston: Boston Publishing Company, 1981. reports U.S. - 57,605
What is remarkable about them is that the only ones that seem to match are the ones that must be, at best, approximations. Some references also differentiate between hostile and non-hostile casualities.
This link allows you to look up US casualities by state.

58,229 Died! however that doesn't count all the suicides or deaths from Agent Orange and Blue, or many who died later of a war related injury! 1, 837 are unaccounted for in Vietnam!

a few less than 50,000, but many more were wounded or missing. Also, over a quarter of a million of the US south Vietnamese allies were killed, and 1 in 10 of the entire Vietnamese population died.

About 50,000 died relatively soon after being wounded. Many more were wounded and died much earlier than they would otherwise due to complications and were never counted as being killed by the war.
