download CCCP at
http://www.cccp-project.net/
it is a codec pack used to playback media files
it covers a broad range of files
(practically all , divx/xvid , h264 / h263, .mkv, flv etc)
but for quicktime movies (mov files) and realtime (rmvb)

Realtime Alternative at

you can play anything in WMP 11 after downloading those
or an alternative, VLC media player at
http://www.videolan.org/
-> highly portable, already contains codecs in itself , but i don't like the interface / look of it

I assume you have either Microsoft Media Player or a third party player like Winamp installed. Whichever player you use make sure it is set up to play all media types.
For example in Media Player click TOOLS - OPTIONS and then select the TAB that sayes FILE TYPES. Down near the bottom is a button that sayes SELECT ALL.
Now Media Player is the default player for all "media types".

.avi files are usually playable in windows media player.
If you have problems with that, you might need to add a few codecs to your machine. Visit http://www.free-codecs.com and download the K-lite codec pack. You'll have no trouble playing anything.
