then let him go. he is your ex. it may be painful or uncomfortable really ending the whole ex thing but once you move on you wont trip on why he doesnt want to remain friends.

Let it go, don't be friends with him, sounds like you just broke up, chances are he broke up with you and you still care about him.
Eventually you won't care about him too, just takes time to heal, hope you get better, find a better guy.
