First of all, how do you get each other's phone without knowing or even seeing each other? That's just weird. Also, I personally think it strange for a guy to just say "I love you" after only talking to you on the phone...obviously, this relationship isn't very deep...

He probably just likes your attitude and how nice you are. He just really likes you and you guys were probably getting really well along that he could finally know he could express his emotions easily so he finally say the 3, tragic, heartfelt words, I love you.
