most cultures here in america assimilate gradually.. its good to retain ethic diversity..this is what makes us who we are..NOW WE HAVE A HUGE PROBLEM THE MUSLIMS HAD NO INTENTION OF ASSIMILATION THEY DIDNT COME HERE TO BE FREE OR ANYTHING AS THOSE IN THE PAST HAVE. THEY CAME HERE TO CONQUER AND CONVERT US ALL TO ISLAM THEREFORE THEY HAVE NO NEED TO ASSIMILATE RATHER WE ARE NOW BENDING IN EVERY FACIT OF SOCIETY TO ASSIMILATE WITH THEM EVEN BIG CORPORATIONS OUT OF GREED ARE BENDING TO THE MUSLIMS WILL. IF YOU FIGHT IT YOU GET WHAT VINCENT VAN GOE'S GRANDSON GOT..WANT TO BE ANOTHER PIM FORTUNE THAT WAS THE PRIME MINISTER THEY BUTCHERED. HOW ABOUT THAT REPORTER IN ANKARA TURKEY WHO WAS SAYING TURKEY MURDERED A MILLION AND A HALF ARMENIANS..OH THEY PUMPED HIM FULL OF LEAD TOO. STAND UP AGAINST EM YOUR GONNA DIE.EITHER DIE OR FIGHT BACK THATS THE ONLY CHOICE YOU HAVE.

People will always hate to say it, but 9 times out of 10, someone will not do something that no one else is doing in a public forum unless they are supported by people doing or desiring to do the same act. No mexicans can live the same life in Pittsburgh as they do in L.A. because in Pittsburgh there isn't enough people for it to be viable. Now on the other hand, in L.A. the culture is big enough that they completly dominate it, but those are the two extremes if you will. Most cultures only maintain their identity if the children grow up in a place where the other children follow that identity.

In the US, resistance to assimilation tends to limit one's options, especially if it means not learning good English or getting a good US type education.
A group can retain some distinct identity without isolating itself from the mainstream, of course.
I recently had my house re-wired by a group of bilingual Armenians, and they seemed quite aware of their Armenian identity, while doing a great job and also speaking perfect English.

My husband's mother is Korean. I have a lot of respect for their culture, and they are ranked #1 for most intelligent in the world as far as IQ (next are Japan and Germany). However, she only had about a 3rd grade Korean education. When she came to the states, she went to school for about a year and was doing wonderfully...until she dropped out. She would be a great example of failing to assimilate. Although she was finally learning english well, and learning to read and write in english, she has since almost completely lost the reading and writing. Her speaking skills have deteriorated so much, that most of the time even her children can't understand her. It's sad to me that people would purposely alienate themselves from society.

I feel that people, such as my mother-in-law are exapmles of stubborness and selfishness. I love her, but she has denied not only herself, but her family of a normal life. Her husband has struggled with going out for work related public engagements. If he takes her it makes him look bad, if he doesn't he looks bad. He children are embarassed of her speaking since no one understands her. Remember, she was doing very, very well while taking classes and could have mastered the english language, but chose not to.

When individuals or groups decide to resist they isolate themselves. It ends up being destructive to everyone. Diversity only works if everyone participates. Otherwise it creates wide drifts that can not be overcome.

I can tell you never have been to the USA. Many people that have come here, settled in towns that spoke their own language. Many kept that language alive for years and generations. They also learned to speak and read english as well. It usually is after the 2nd to 3rd generation that they lose the language and speak only english.
