I get out of the Army in about 23 months,I wanted to change branches and go in to the Air Force but people keep telling me the Air Force isn't taking Prior Service from the Army, so Is this true or what?, I know someone out there can help me here, It would be greatly appreciated.

Currently, I am stationed overseas in Korea, So I can't just go to an Air Force recruiting station like in the states, thats why I'm asking.

I was an Air Force Recruiter for 6 years and in that time I was able to re-enlist only 2 prior service applicants and those could be only Air Force veterans.
I know that the Army has beefed up its Blue to Green program over the years, taking Air Force veterans that wanted to come back into the military but could not get back into the Air Force.
Your best bet would be to go into the Air Force Reserve or the Air National Guard and then try to get back into the active duty Air Force after completing the Air Force training.
Check out the websites, I believe there are ways to e-mail questions. I hope you enjoy the rest of your time in ROK. I spent a year at Osan AB in the late 1990's.

Your recruiter can answer that question, but in 23 months, the answer might be different.
The reason prior service recruits have a harder time enlisting in a different branch is that they take a Re-Enlistment Slot , not a Enlistment Slot.
Also note, a prior service recruit does not count for the recruiters monthly recruitment goal, so recruiters are not going to bust thier butts helping you, they will make you do most of the paperwork and running around yourself.( I got this straight from a recruiter)
Final advise would be to call the local Air Force recruiter now and see what your options are, so you can make future plans. Then contact an Air Force recruiter again a couple of months before you either reenlist in the Army, Prior service into the Marines or Navy or ETS out of the Army.
PS: as a Prior Service Recruit joining the Air Force, you would not have to attend Basic again, just a 10 day course teaching Air Force customs, uniform wear and rank structure.

Not sure what the shortest enlistment is for the Army or Navy but you'll have to serve it before you can join the AF. You can't transfer the remainder of your enlistment to any other branch but you could check into a transfer out of the active duty Army and go into the Army Reserves or National Guard. I know of several people who've done that in the AF, you may want and talk to a Reserve or Guard recruiter. Now you can serve your time and then enlist in the AF. When I cross trained into flight engineer there were a dozen former soldiers & marines going through Aircrew training. They went onto be boomers, loadmasters, gunners & FE's. Again talk to an AF recruiter for more details...enlisted aviators are always in demand.

My older brother was in the Air Force, honorable discharged and went almost immediately into the Marines. He encountered no problems.
You might want to give a call to an Air Force recruiter - can't hurt to get the latest info right from the source.

All I can say to you is to talk to your nearest Air Force recruiter. They should be able to take you, especially if you have already been in another branch. They usually smile at people who have prior service.

everything i have heard is that the AF is not taking prior service--
however,i think your best bet would be to get in contact with someone in charge of retention and recruiting at one of the US air bases in korea
when i joined the AF in 1982 ,I went through the AF liason at rota naval air station in spain
good luck!

unfortunely it only goes from blue to green as the air force considers most soldiers and Marines as to agressive to be retrained. Talk to a recruiter but they'll probably tell you no.
P.S. if they do you may have to go thru their basic as no service crosses without going to basic except from USMC to other.

Sure you can. My father was a US Marine (grunt) during WWII. After the war he went to college, graduated and re-entered the military in the US Air Force as an officer.

Personally, I would think the only way to get a for sure answer is to call you local AF recruiting station and ask. They can give you a 100% accurate answer.

Its easy.. why not just call an air force recuiter. They can give you a straight answer. If I had it to do again, I would probably go air force.
