Berber is the weave style, and it is a good one to stand up to traffic. Also, while expensive, wool yarn (vs. man-made fibers) is considered the best and will wear well while looking good. Sisal is also an excellent wearing and looking yarn and is less expensive. Man-made fibers last well enough, but they attract dirt and oil and can look ugly long before they wear out. A good quality padding also plays an important part in carpet's wear. Also, it's weave construction is important to consider. The density of a carpet's weave is important to durability. The higher the number of stitches per square inch, generally assures more years of wear. Stain guards have their good a bad points. While they repel liquid stains, they can attract dirt, so you need to consider which is more important to you.
Check the carpet itself as "performance ratings" (PR) are sometimes displayed on carpet sample labels. On a 1 to 5 scale: 5 is no change and 1 is very severe change. The performance rating indicates the amount of surface appearance change to be expected in major traffic areas during the first year of service for a typical four-person household. A carpet with a higher performance rating (such as 4 or 5) is one that will maintain its new appearance longer in various traffic conditions than one with a lower performance rating. A 2 to 3 rating is good for areas with less traffic.
