I was recently recalled to my job as a filght attendant which was my dream since I was little. My problem is that I have always suffered from panic attacks. They are so bad now that I can't imagine driving to the airport for trips- let alone getting on a plane and traveling thousands of miles from my house. I've done different medicines, which help temporarily, I've done sessions etc... I've read books on the topic. I just can't imagine doing any other job- I have to turn to alcohol to sleep most nights which I can't do once I am flying again. How do I sleep and how do I nip a panic attack in the bud?

I really sympathize with you and i am going to tell you something that was once told to me I ended up in the emergency room in an ambulance for the emph time and was again being treated for Asthma of course I did not have Asthma but my panic attacks took the form of difficulty breathing and during an episode I would perspire profusely . Then a doctor said the magic words at least to me they were "What do you think will happen if you don't get a breath" and I said I don't know and he said " Worst case Scenario
you will faint and you Auto systems will take over" I have never had an attack since. You see the cause of the attacks is the fear of the attacks so they become self perpetuating ..you have to break the cycle easy said right....you really have to stop doing anything to sleep especially alcohol...Do not sleep until you can just fall asleep. Read, walk, do anything..but once you start taking remedies to sleep they become habit forming They say it takes 21 days to form a habit..I am pulling for you lots of luck

There are a variety of cds out that focus on anxiety and panic attacks and they are highly effective. My girlfriend has seen dramatic improvements since she started using them. There are also many medications out to help with these issues. The most important thing in my opinion is to find an inner peace. Meditation, yoga - these are so healthy spiritually and emotionally. Spend some quiet time each day to focus on your inner self and find peace. Try breathing exercises and self-talk. Good luck and dont give up. This can be conquered.

It sounds like there's something at the root of your panic attacks. Doesn't sound like anything is physically wrong with you. Did you ever find out in therapy what may be blocking you? Unless you deal with whatever is wrong in your life you will probably continue having them. I'm dealing with depression and panic attacks. I refused to go on medication b/c I knew that wouldn't solve my problem. It would only cover it up. Once I started dealing with the real reason for my unhappiness. I began to feel better.

Don't turn to alcohol to help you, next you'll need to be in AA.
I really suggest you go to a counselor and talk about this; when it started, what was happening, what has made it worse, etc.

You need to get to the root of the problem. Meds aren't a good way to go, they mask the problem and don' t solve it. You want to control your thoughts, maybe behavior modification will help you or biofeedback. See what will help the most. But controlling what you think makes a big difference. Ask yourself this; is what I am thinking rational? If not, then you can learn to calm yourself and it will get better.

I used to be a white knuckle flyer. Prior to that I loved it. But problems in my former marriage where causing me to fear flying. I know that sounds weird, but true. I got rid of him and now I like flying again!

Hun, I don't know of any "magic bullet" that could help you...(If I did..I would gladly give it to ya)

But I can suggest you contact New Life Ministries and see what they can do for you. They are a counseling ministry and I have heard them offer advice to a lot of people on there radio program.

...And I will say a prayer for you....too!! ♥
