I want to help children but I don't deal with test scores. Also, I would like to know the average salary of these positions.

Why not get your degree in social work, then take a chance with both fields for short time. You'd be a better guidance counselor if you had a degree in sociology or psychology. But both have to deal with test scores! School social workers deal with children who have disabilities...there is a ton of testing and evaluting done in this field. Guidance counselors deal with state standardized testing, but they don't have to adminster the tests as the social worker would have to do. As far as salaries, that information varies from town to town, from county to county, from state to state, from federally funded positions to grant funded, to state, county or city funded positions. In our school system, a social worker must have a 4 year degree, where as a guidance counselor is only required to have an associates degree.

If you were an MSW you could do both.

An MSW opens many doors that are not available to other degree's!

You could even work at a hospital, which will pay a lot more. Some school systems pay squat for their counselors, other much more!

A School Counselor in NY makes 45,000, which is high end!

In Madison Wis you can make up to 52,000 with a masters and a lot of experience!

Social Workers with an MSW usually earn up to 52,000 depending on field, however, they usually move into counselors or therapist.

Poor wages for a master"s degree when the highest payed starting salary is a Sports Therapist!

A degree in business would give you more options and higher pay but less security and longer hours.

Don't have average salaries--they vary from place to place, anyway.

A social worker is usually at the masters level--minimum. He or she goes to a lot of school.-
Not that teachers (who can be guidance counselors) don't.

Your goals are each wonderful - talk to a school counselor about which would be best for you.
