I had the resection surgery a year ago because of severe diverticulitis. I did not need a colostomy since it was under "elective" conditions (I was not infected at the time of the surgery). Afterwards, I was totally miserable for about ten days and I lost a little weight (about 10 lbs), but in the long run, it was worth it.
In your case, I doubt that you'll need a colostomy. Make sure you see a good gastroenterologist and get a second opinion as well.

I had ulcerative colitis that got so bad my large intestine ruptured, so mine was emergency surgery. I now have a temporary loop ileostomy.
Beforehand, I was always exhausted, crampy, and in the restroom with bloody stool. I know how it feels to be in constant pain.
I would say that if you and your doctor decide having a bowel resection is the best course of action then DO IT! The pain is only temporary and they give you a PCA pump, full of morphine or dilaudid, after the surgery so you control your pain meds. After you get rid of that they give you oral narcotics, usually something along the lines of vicodin.
And if you had to have a temporary ileostomy it would only be for 1-2 months. I am actually getting rid of mine Jan 30 (so excited). I feel better now than I have felt in a long time.
My opinion is that it is well worth it.
