Gaman (我慢 or がまん) is a very important concept in the Japanese psyche. It means patience; endurance; perseverance; tolerance; self-control; self-denial and you hear it when you have to face a situation that you don't like but have to endure.

if a kid is complaining in a store the mum will tell them to 'gaman shinasai' which means 'hold your horses' or 'have patience'.
you would use it same way that we use it in english.
Like 'you can stay at my house but it only has small rooms so it would be okay if you could 'gaman' it. get the idea?
'heya ga semai dakedo gaman dekireba tomatte ii yo." etc.
