what is the alternate meaning of tener in the preterite and imperfect past tense. my understanding is
tuve=i got/recieved
tenia=i had
i used the yo conjugation for example purposes.
i know with some verbs the meaning changes slightly to fit the different tense (supe v sabia , i found out v i knew)

Examples...

Tuve un carro por dos dias.
I had a car for two days.
Reason: Time limit is specifically mentioned.

Tenía un coche.
I had a car.
Reason: No time limit mentioned, there was just a car sometime in the past, but not anymore.

Hope that helps!

Preterite in the yo form = tuve = "I had" - decribes a completed action
Imperfect in the yo form = tenia = "I was having" - sets the scene

Yo tenía la gripe. You would use the imperfect tense here rather than the perfect 'tuve' because it wasn't a single completed action.

amazingly enough you can get away with either Yo tenia tiemp yo tuve tiempo when the subject is male but when subject is female it matters yo tenia agua (correct) yo tuve aqua (although sounds correct is not)

well like it depends. tuve wud b used it if wuz u had some that began ended, or for something that wuz uninterupted. tenia wud b used for an incomplete action, old habit or past descrition- weather, age, time feelins date- in the past.
