All that you eat must be sanctified to God and taken as his 'prasad'- gift to us. It is only the animal that takes the food with no thought to the provider of the food.

The Atma or the soul what we call is Devinne and it dwells in a body. So long body is alright the soul stays in. The moment the body is not fit for stay, the soul leaves. Body is required to carry out all our activities and It thrives on food. To keep the body hail and healthy for the soul to stay one has to take the food. The main purpose behind taking food is for retaining the soul but not to nourish the body. If one feels that the food is taken only for the sake of the body the whole spirutual thinking goes off. To remind that the food is taken for retaining the soul we have to say BRAHMARPANAM. iF YOU REFER TO GITHA THERE IS ONE SLOKA 'BRAHMARPANAM BRAHMAHAVIH BRAHMAGNO BRAHMANAHUTI-----The fire in the belly that digests the food is nothing but BRAHMA. The food offered is to keep it alive and the process is termed as performing of an YAGNA.

In Hinduism, food should only be eaten after it is offered to god or the guru.
