ok, a dog that has intestinal parasites gets them from eating things such as fleas, other wild animals and picking up the eggs from other infested animals. a dog cannot get worms from eating meat, chocolate or any other human food that a dog should not be eating anyway! is anyone else but me really bothered by the amount of people that seriously answer, that you shouldn't feed your dog chocolate, pork, etc because it will give them worms? unless there are egg segments on this food, your pet will not get worms from this. am i alone here? am i the only one that finds the advice of not feeding these foods because of the fear of worms, and not the actual health problems associated with these types of foods disturbing???

ok I KNOW and DO NOT feed my dog's these things. please read. i said that these foods should not be fed anyway. i want to know if anyone besides myself and looks like shepherdgirl, is bothered by insane responses to questions. such as feeding your dog chocolate can give your dog worms. i don't feed my dog chocolate, and won't. i was asking if i was the only one here concerned with answers that have no fact or really intelligence to them. and honestly the responses here are not helping me feel any better. i'm not going to get a book and read it, i do not feed my dog's anything but dog food! i'm saying only eggs from a parasite can cause worms, and NOT foods such as chocolate, pork etc...unless they have parasitic eggs on them. please.

Yes I am bothered by some responses to these questions.

Feeding raw meat to dogs will NOT give it worms (nor will it make it sick in any other form either) Raw meat is a natural food for dogs, they are designed to eat it and digest it with no ill effects, unlike humans.Beef, chicken, turkey, pork, gizzards, hearts, liver, tripe, etc are all perfectly acceptable to feed dogs and wil lNOT cause any problems.

Feeding chocolate or sweets of any kind will NOT give your dog worms..chocolate can make it very ill even cause death depending on type of chocolate and amount ingested.(it doesn't cause heart attacks) To many sweets will cause vomiting & diarreha.
Onions are dangerous to dogs. They can cause Heinz Anemia..which is very serious. Grapes and raisins can cause kidney problems.
Handling a puppy will NOT give it worms.

Worms come from the moms while in utro(even the best taken care of dogs will still pass worms on to their pups this is why ALL puppies & their moms need to be dewormed at 2, 4, 6 & 8 weeks of age), worms come from fleas (tapeworms) and ingesting rodents (tapeworms), they come from the ground (hookworms, whipworms), they come from being in areas where infected animals have been (roundworms, hookworms, whipworms)

OTC dewormers aren't effective nor are they safe..they can cause some serious side effects including death (as can OTC flea meds). Also it is unwise to deworm a dog without knowing what you are deworming for.A dog can have more then one type of parasite present and not all dewormers are appropriate for all types of worms.

Another misconception is concerning dry dog food..it will NOT help teeth nor make them cleaner nor prevent tarter...this is a bIG misconception one still believed by many vets. Dogs do not chew food like humans, their teeth aren't designed for chewing..they only break pieces into a size just small enough to swallow that's it...food isn't in the mounth long enough to cause tarter nor is it in there long enough to be chewed to make a difference. Likewise canned food will not cause bacteria or plaque on teeth for the same reason...it isn't chewed nor is it in the mouth long enough.

Chocolate and onions can kill a dog!!!!!!You need to go to library or Bookstore and buy a book or Books on raising a puppy so you will know about your pup .Dogs have worms from many sourses it is not that clear cut. They are born with them and they must be treated at least 1X each month depending on what your vet recomends.People food in some cases is okay if cooked but dry food ,a good dry food is sugested. That is also something you need to talk to your vet about.Good Luck!!!

I know that chocolate can cause heart attacks in dogs as can coffee or pop with caffeine. Its the caffeine that is the problem. It increases the dogs heart beat and depending on the dog, can cause a fatal heart attack.
I've never heard anything about onions.
Pork can't cause worms but can be bad for your dog if it has a weight problem as it usually has a fair amount of fat in it and people tend to give the fatty parts to the dog.
Your best diet is a dry food that is large enough that a dog has to chew it up to eat as this keeps his teeth clean and and supplies all the nutrients that a dog needs. Fresh, well cooked meats make great treats for them.
Most small bones or bones with grizzle on them can be bad. Grizzle can stay in their stomach as its not easy to digest and causes a lot of problems if they get too much. Dried pork eats are also very bad for dogs to chew on. I found this out when my dog almost choked to death on one. As the do chews, it softens the layers and they can sometimes swallow larger junks of it that can block the windpipe.

ive always heard that chocolates like poison to dogs so i'd check with my vet before giving it chocolate if i were you cause it would not be good to wake up to a dead animal and as far as the other things your worried about (pork )if not thoughrally cooked right can give you worms as well i hope you go see avet before you give it table food chocolate or leftovers most of the problems with table foods are the spices on them and bones splintering in their intestines cant you imagine how painful thet would be

Yes! Feeding chocolate to a dog will not give it worms but it will make it very sick and can be dangerous. As for meat as long as it is cooked properly it is fine. It is this kind of ignorence that puts them in danger.

Yes you should go to the vet and take a stool sample with you ASAP. Also part of routine care is to take in a stool sample once or twice a year and also have a heartworm test done once a year, the vet will draw blood. There is alot more to the health of a dog than eating, pooping and peeing.

The lack of common sense that people seem to have is very disturbing. I just do not know what to think about the answers given on YA anymore some of it is just down right dangerous.
I really hope that people do not take the advice here seriously and they seek other forms of information.
I read a while back a person asked how to get rid of fleas on four week old pups and someone answered to treat the pups with sevin insecticide.
How idiotic was this answer??

dogs are cannibals by nature, i do not think twice about giving my dogs "human" meat products for the exception of poultry bones they can very easily splinter and cause an intestinal blockage. but remember chocolate in enough quantity is fatal to dogs

I had a couple of dogs in my day and I agree that what you said about people more worrying about worms than the overall health risk, do these people really love there pets?
